coffeebaron: He probably only broke the speed limit due to the 80km guy speeding up to 100km at the passing opportunity :(

that would be kind. they usually get to 110 100m before the passing lane

If you are travelling slower than the speed limit and there are vehicles following you, you must:

  • keep as close to the left side of the road as possible
  • pull over as soon as it is safe to let following vehicles pass.
Don’t speed up on straight stretches of road to prevent following vehicles from passing you.

How far did you follow said policeman for at the slow speed of 80km/h?  My impression if it was prolonged would be he was breaking the law.  And yes you did break the speed limit.

while this is in the road code, i honestly cant recall a time when i have personally seen or hear of it actually being enforced..

Definitely happens. Not as often as I'd like though.

Had a friend driving a busted up Mazda that could barely make it over 70 on the Southern Motorway in Auckland (100KM/H zone most of it). He got a warning and told to get off the motorway if he can't get his car to go atleast above 80. Cop said it was a danger to other motorists, fair enough.

Someone got pulled over for it in Piha on Police 10/7 or Roadcops or one of those shows not so long ago. Tourist driver, huge tail of traffic behind. Got a warning also. I feel its one of those things where you wouldn't get a ticket unless you were being an a$$h0le to the cop about it.

re: speeding up on long sections of road: Never heard of anyone getting done for it as I imagine when they do, the people that are going 127KM/H to get past will be the ones getting pulled over instead :P

maybe my memory is a little fuzzy tonight... cant say i recall such episode..

unless its not on ondemand, then maybe it makes sense..

i find it too common that someone going extra slow below the limit, will simply make people angry and do stupid things.

example being recently i almost had a head on with another car, left the road a little to avoid them. They were frustrated with a truck on a rural road, and overtook it on an hill (which was S bend blind corners...)

i missed catching the numberplate unfortunately, and was not going to chase after to find it.. they live locally, and ill spot them again on the road, probably doing the same thing knowning the type of person it was..

You will find that *most* Police Officers will allow a bit of extra tolerance for speed when passing, provided the maneuver is being done reasonably and safely.  But 27km/h over the limit, or 47 km/h faster than the car being passed is a bit excessive IMO, and suggests the OP perhaps didn't really have enough clear space to complete the passing maneuver safely in the first place.

Unless you can sustain a much higher speed for a long distance, the time difference between having to drive behind a slower vehicle at 80km/h for a few minutes and free travelling at 100 km/h is negligible.  Better to be 5 minutes late in this world than years early for the next.

It's a bit of a grey area - well actually it isn't, but I'd say most people speed when overtaking. Personally I try stick below 115-120, bearing in mind that I can be ticketed.

It can be tricky though, if you change gears and put your foot down, and focus on the car that you are passing and the road ahead, then you can easily give yourself a fright if you don't keep an eye on the speedo

The law is clear but I think for safety reasons it should be looked at. For me the shorter time spent exposed to danger whilst passing the better and the law should allow a momentary speed burst to allow for a quick safe over take. However in reallity if one is passing when "necessary" and can complete the task safety and according to the guidelines in the road code there should be little need to exceed the speed limits. If a rise above the limit is needed it shouldn't need to be more than about 10km/h, if it is more the 10  there is no need to overtake.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Would be great to have passing lanes with a dual speed limit, say 90/110 with very strict enforcement for anyone exceeding the 90 limit whilst being overtaken.

Not a bad thought, unfortunately I suspect the w*nkers who speed up everytime someone is trying to overtake them would just pull into the passing lane though. :-/  Things will be better when the machines take over and we're all in driverless cars  ;-)

Its not just the speed that would be of concern tho... its knowing that you have the space to make the move. Document I read for AU, shows you need 750m at 110kmph to safely overtake a car doing 80kmph.  And thats where a lot of people go wrong I think.... they just assume that because theyre doing 30k more than the car in front they dont need much room at all to make the move.... then find they do. Too late.

Like everyone has pointed out.  100KM/h is the speed limit.  Full stop.  But When passing, it's completely unpractical.  Especially considering drivers in this country hate it when being passed by other cars and speed up to prevent it.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the car traveling at 80KM/h sped up to 105KM/h to make it harder for OP.
I don't over-take on regular road unless I can see for ever ahead of me and the car/truck is literally doing something stupid like 60KM/h in a 100KM/h zone.

On the motorway, I pass as quickly as humanly possible when required.  It's much safer with two lanes traveling in the same direction.  If the slow-poke in the left lane decides to be a dick about it and speeds up to 120KM/h, he is the one being dangerous and braking and merging back behind the speeding car is not always the best/safest option in that situation, especially when there is trailing traffic, which there often is.

Bottom line I guess is, pass when it's absolutely safe.  Pass at what ever speed is necessary to get past the nupty in the left lane trying to drag you, but make sure you can handle the extra speed and a camera isn't hidden around the next corner.  Then of course, slow down to 100KM/h in the shortest amount of time that is safe.

When I first had the Primera I dropped it to 2nd (it's a 4spd Auto and prefers to change up at 90-100) to overtake, and kept the foot down until I hit the limit ... which did not make for a pleasant experience.  My previous car was a 1.6 laser carby manual, which had no tach,  or limiter I suspect (aside from valve float) but it was a pretty safe bet even in third that you weren't going to get up to max RPM in a hurry.

Yeh Im not 100% sure if it was available on Demand as I have to admit I only use it for Shorty and Coro. I watched that particular police show on an actual TV :O

It was quite some time ago, like a good 6 months I'd say.

And yup have to agree about making others angry. Seen it way to often where someone will just shoot out into another lane without checking and nearly take someone out when they try to get past someone. Just breath and cross your fingers the slow driver will let you pass eventually haha

Unless theyre being idiots by driving 60 in a 100 zone, then soon as you hit a passing lane they somehow find the gas and shoot upto 120 to prevent you from getting past them... then slow down again to 60 once the lanes merge again. Havent had that happen for some time now tho... and if it did, not much I can do about. The acceleration times between a Prelude VtIR and Toyota Avensis ppl mover vary quite a bit and dont allow me to get upto speed in time ;)
