coffeebaron: He probably only broke the speed limit due to the 80km guy speeding up to 100km at the passing opportunity :(
hio77:itxtme: Just to put another spin on this
If you are travelling slower than the speed limit and there are vehicles following you, you must:
Don’t speed up on straight stretches of road to prevent following vehicles from passing you.
- keep as close to the left side of the road as possible
- pull over as soon as it is safe to let following vehicles pass.
How far did you follow said policeman for at the slow speed of 80km/h? My impression if it was prolonged would be he was breaking the law. And yes you did break the speed limit.
while this is in the road code, i honestly cant recall a time when i have personally seen or hear of it actually being enforced..

Definitely happens. Not as often as I'd like though.
Had a friend driving a busted up Mazda that could barely make it over 70 on the Southern Motorway in Auckland (100KM/H zone most of it). He got a warning and told to get off the motorway if he can't get his car to go atleast above 80. Cop said it was a danger to other motorists, fair enough.
Someone got pulled over for it in Piha on Police 10/7 or Roadcops or one of those shows not so long ago. Tourist driver, huge tail of traffic behind. Got a warning also. I feel its one of those things where you wouldn't get a ticket unless you were being an a$$h0le to the cop about it.
re: speeding up on long sections of road: Never heard of anyone getting done for it as I imagine when they do, the people that are going 127KM/H to get past will be the ones getting pulled over instead :P

coffeebaron: Would be great to have passing lanes with a dual speed limit, say 90/110 with very strict enforcement for anyone exceeding the 90 limit whilst being overtaken.

nickb800: It can be tricky though, if you change gears and put your foot down, and focus on the car that you are passing and the road ahead, then you can easily give yourself a fright if you don't keep an eye on the speedo

maybe my memory is a little fuzzy tonight... cant say i recall such episode..
unless its not on ondemand, then maybe it makes sense..
i find it too common that someone going extra slow below the limit, will simply make people angry and do stupid things.

xpd: Unless theyre being idiots by driving 60 in a 100 zone, then soon as you hit a passing lane they somehow find the gas and shoot upto 120 to prevent you from getting past them... then slow down again to 60 once the lanes merge again. Havent had that happen for some time now tho... and if it did, not much I can do about. The acceleration times between a Prelude VtIR and Toyota Avensis ppl mover vary quite a bit and dont allow me to get upto speed in time ;)
