in the video, why is the driver of the car with the camera even in the right hand lane?

When driving on a motorway:
•keep left, unless you are passing

Yep that guy was probably pushing it a bit, but.. If you get passed on the left (and the road is not congested) then you are in the wrong. You must use the left most lane unless passing. It doesn't matter how fast you are going, get out of the right hand lane.

if there was one rule that the police could enforce that would make a true difference this would be it.

If you are planning to turn right then you may need to get into the right lane a reasonable distance before turning if there is congestion.

These are the rules

A driver may drive in the right lane in the direction of travel when driving on a multi-lane road if—
(a)the driver is turning right, or making a U-turn from the centre of the road, and is giving the prescribed signal of that driver's intention to turn right; or
(b)the driver is passing; or
(c)the left lane is unavailable to the driver; or
(d)the driver is required by any provision of this rule to drive in the right lane; or
(e)a variable lane control downward-facing arrow sign indicates that the driver must drive in the right lane; or
(f)the driver is avoiding an obstruction; or
(g)the traffic in all other lanes is congested; or
(h)the traffic in every lane is congested.

Pretty simple really

So actually no he can't just get in the right hand lane because that lane turns off some distance away ... Of course since most kiwi drivers would be sitting in that lane and wouldn't let you in.....

On the urban motorway the passing thing does not apply at that point due to the numerous exits. If you are going all the way to the Terrace tunnel then the far right lane is the most appropriate and you should move into it as soon as possible to avoid lane changes as the traffic density increases especially after the Hawkestone St exit. Last minute changes cause tailbacks. Do a defensive driving which I have done and it one of the many things they teach.

And to avoid the inevitable, there is lane control with matrix signs advising the correct lane to use for what exit one is taking.

They can teach what they like, however the Road User Rules 2004 give no such exemption. It is therefore illegal ...end of story.

Note the road is not conjested in this dash cam footage ... Therefore the dashcam guy should get a ticket once he shows the footage to the cops....but he won't

CYaBro: Not as dangerous as doing a u-turn into an oncoming logging truck :(

Pfft. Where's the revenue in fining people for doing dodgy turns? Much easier to ping people for breaking the limit

As I said there is lane control in force, and those cars were about to hit the terrace congestion which is there all day.

If a police officer sees you doing an illegal or a dangerous turn you will get fined.

I just wish when large chunks of bark come off the back of a logging truck bounce off the road and hit your band new $1000 Arai helmet that the driver could get fined for insecure load.... "No sir logging trucks are exempt"

I always slow when I encounter logging trucks and let them get well away from me.
