nathan: in the video, why is the driver of the car with the camera even in the right hand lane?
When driving on a motorway:
•keep left, unless you are passing

mdooher: If you get passed on the left (and the road is not congested) then you are in the wrong. You must use the left most lane unless passing. It doesn't matter how fast you are going, get out of the right hand lane.
if there was one rule that the police could enforce that would make a true difference this would be it.

If you are planning to turn right then you may need to get into the right lane a reasonable distance before turning if there is congestion.

KiwiNZ: On the urban motorway the passing thing does not apply at that point due to the numerous exits. If you are going all the way to the Terrace tunnel then the far right lane is the most appropriate and you should move into it as soon as possible to avoid lane changes as the traffic density increases especially after the Hawkestone St exit. Last minute changes cause tailbacks. Do a defensive driving which I have done and it one of the many things they teach.

CYaBro: Not as dangerous as doing a u-turn into an oncoming logging truck :(

They can teach what they like, however the Road User Rules 2004 give no such exemption. It is therefore illegal ...end of story.
Note the road is not contested in this dash cam footage ... Therefore the dash camsh guy should get a ticket once he shows the footage to the cops....but he won't

Pfft. Where's the revenue in fining people for doing dodgy turns? Much easier to ping people for breaking the limit

If a police officer sees you doing an illegal or a dangerous turn you will get fined.
