kiwipeter: Thanks - I've sent him another email and this time I think he has taken the hint and gone off to the Post Shop. Thing is it's not just my car, it's also a colleagues and (get this) his own car!

Silly sod.

Kinda time to show him how to do this stuff on line.

Almost sounds like my brother in laws ex boss. My BIL was driver of company car and after a new owner took over the business, the new owners wouldn't renew the expired rego. When he asked abut who is going to pay any infringements, boss would tell him not to get caught. This, along with a verbal warning for not keeping outside of car clean, plus some other issues caused my BIL and a few others to resign.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Will you look at that! A new rego ticket just landed on my desk and expires at the end of next month (it's been backdated!)

He apologised and said he forgot all about it (!). I'll be on his back again next month come renewal time and won't leave it so long to nag!

Thanks to all who replied to my post.

Colour me paranoid, but potentially a sign of financial problems for the business?

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. It really is time this stuff was changed.

There is just no need to be displaying a ticket on cars any more!

I was pulled up by a police officer recently, in an area which I expected there to be poor mobile coverage, and he was able to find out everything about me on his mobile device.

At this time I should be able to give the department my credit card number and they automatically charge me each month just like all my other service providers.

I should be able to request a simple email be sent if there is a charging problem.  This really is stupidly simple stuff which can be done with FREE software, so there is just no excuse for an organization with the sort of resources that this one has.

...or not unusual for small business.

Compliance costs for small business can just get out of hand.

Warrant of fitness stickers are another thing that are just unrequired.

What annoys me even more is that I can't even get access to my own information without jumping through hoops!

My car rego expired a while back and the police just refused to tell me over the phone if it was expired or if I'd just mislaid the stupid label.

While we're on the subject of this crap, it also annoys the crap out of me that I have to have a warrant to get a registration!  That is just a bad rule.

1) The Police don't manage or administer the WOF program, they are not the ones to call up and ask about WOF expiry. How do you misplace something adhered to your windscreen, though? :o

2) This is because the WOF deems the car mechanically safe enough to be allowed on the road, and a vehicle is required to be deemed mechanically sound before it can be registered or licensed for road use.

1.  Read what I wrote.  I was making reference to the registration having expired.

2.  The "New Zealand Government" administers the whole process.  We have a thing called the "Internet" that can be used to link stuff together.  It's now time that the NZG used the Internet to link their stuff with me in a way that no longer required bits of paper stuck to my car.

With respect to mechanical safety, I don't know about you, but I don't use a stupid sticker or a 6 monthly check to know that!  I get stuff fixed when it breaks like most normal people.

... which is why 80% of new small businesses fail within 3 years.

Too many "normal people" don't.

That's why a WOF is mandatory.

You're way oversimplifying it.  It really, really, can't be done with any free software that exists right now (though, build one and see if the NZTA uses it.  I'm actually betting they'd oppose it for no reason other than "but it's not expensive").

However, the label is pretty pointless.  At least two Australian states no longer require registration labels (South Australia and Queensland I know of) except for special permit vehicles, and the world hasn't ended (though if your authority is useless at mailing stuff, you're gonna have a bad time!)

Why is someone paying their road tax (rego) on time, a bad thing if their car hasn't got a WOF? As surely anything that helps to ensure people pay their taxes on time has to be good. Also the problem with the current setup is that more people get caught in the "Fines trap". As they get given 2 fines instead of 1. And they then have to spend money on paying the fines that could otherwise be spent on fixing their car. This also tends to mostly trap low income workers instead of those on the dole. Or those on higher incomes.
