The scooter technically has right of way, but you would still expect the scooter operator to exercise caution and not assume that every reversing vehicle will be able to see them through the fence. This is similar to pedestrian crossings - the cars are supposed to stop to let someone cross, but that doesn't mean that a pedestrian can just burst out onto the crossing without checking or without waiting for traffic to see them and stop.

Even where there is one, they still do it. Vehicles are only required to give way where the pedestrian is "already on the crossing" OR "obviously waiting to cross", not "dawdling along the sidewalk before making a sharp turn and almost sprinting onto the crossing" as many seem to do. I'd like to see TPTB doing some education and enforcement in this area to lower the number of Kamikaze pedestrians before natural selection does it for them.

Exactly. If a person bomb bursts out into the path of a car - whether a crossing or a driveway - then as long as the driver has exercised their responsibility of care as much as they can practically do so, then I don't see that the driver is at fault even if the pedestrian has right of way. In other words, right of way is not a force field and people have to use common sense :)

I reverse into parking spots.
It was a requirement of a job I used to do - and I've never got out of the habit. Makes for a faster, safer exit.

That's a easy one when driveway or exit crosses a footpath the vehicle crossing it must giveway. Generally works well in residential areas but has anyone notice this rule gets forgotten around malls or petrol stations exits.

Nope. I try to use commonsense.

Not illegally reversing into diagonal parks, just all those supermarket carparks, off street parking, people's driveways..
I've convinced my wife to reverse-park whenever she can as well.

We're the people who aren't reversing out blind across footpaths or into pedestrian and traffic flow at those places.
Whenever I drive into a large carpark and spot a couple facing out among the hundreds and hundreds of cars nosed in, I'm like "yeah buddy!"

It's the safest way to park, you don't end up having to reverse out into the stream of people pushing trolleys, small children and cars.

The drivers I find most amusing are the ones that park front-in at the supermarket covered walkways. Especially when it's raining, and they're standing in the rain, blocking traffic with their trolley, unloading their shopping into the car. Whereas if you've reversed in, you can stand in the dry. About 75% of drivers just don't get this, makes me wonder what way round they sit on the toilet.

I would say as the car is crossing the footpath, the car should give way.

I believe any vehicle using (or crossing) a footpath should do so at pedestrian speed.

Not many people know this but I've been ticketed for driving through Amber lights. That's apparently illegal too. The insurance person did not believe me.
