The 'good' folks at Wilson Parking manage the paid parking at Palmy Hospital. I feel sorry for any residents within about 500 metres of the hospital as lots of people park in residential streets to avoid paying.

Which is why the nearby residential streets are a mixture of "residents only" permits and 60 to 120 minute limited zones. And from what I'm told by my family, very heavily policed and ticketed.

Some streets are, but there is still a lot of streets around the hospital where we can park all day without paying for it, which is what I do for the 1-2 times a week I might bring a car to work.

Only if you have access to cheap/free parking in town or are car pooling,

A Paraparaumu + bus monthly pass is $270, or $11.40 per day (20 day work month)

Waikanae is $300/month - $15 per month,

Your commute at 100km per day will cost at least $10 in petrol alone

ChCh the other day, 245.7 That was 98 though, BP doesn't have 95 at my local, just 91 and 98

Yea I average on about $10 per day. The prices you indicated above are monthly passes and its only really reasonable to buy one of those tickets if you were commuting into town every single day. I normally purchase the 10trip passes which suite me better as I'm only in wellington on average 10 week days a month.

Society attitudes to owning and driving single occupant cars has to change. It simply won't be feasible in the medium term, short term for some the way petrol prices are going.

This works for people close by but I get really irritated when terms like "light raill", "walking", "cycling" are thrown around.

Its not a solution to those that live further out. I live 50km out of the city and this is my commute If I have to rely on public transport:

Walk to Bus station -> Wait for Bus --> Bus to train station --> Wait for train -> Train to Wellington -> Wait for Bus (or walk) -> Bus to destination in Wellington if not close enough to walk from Wellington Station.

Then do the whole thing all over again in reverse for the home commute.

Now add picking up and dropping off kids (at certain times) into that commute. Its impossible. Do I need to mention the reliability of the trains on the Kapiti Line? Good most of the time, at least once a week there is some sort of bad delay which causes you to miss a bus.

From Kapiti that whole public transport commute is at least 1.5 hours one way (if services run on time). Door to door, commute time is 45-50 minutes by car if I leave before 7:00am. Petrol even at nearly $2.20per l is far cheaper than a monthly train pass from kapiti/+ bus fares.

Somebody please tell me I need to sell up and move closer to the city - I'm just waiting for the comment, who is going to say it? :-)

I can empathise, hell I even agree with you, but reality is slapping us all in the face. We can't keep going expecting things to be the same as it use to be, or even as it is now. Can you commute to the city edge and then carpool? Take the car as far as a city edge bus/train station and change modes there? How about parking on the outskirts and taking an Uber in? (probably cheaper than the parking fees).

Changing modes of travel is a real challenge, sadly made even more difficult in NZ by having poor or expensive public transport options compared to other countries. The humble ICE cars' days are numbered if you want to live, work, play in our larger cities.

Its a bit annoying as our Accord Euro requires 95 or greater, My bike 656cc, I have to put 98, and i do as well for the lawnmower. Not sure of thats a good idea or doenst matter?

BP In Halswell doesnt sell 95

Wilson Parking... grrr the mention of the name gets my hackles up. Along with their dodgy front "Parking Enforcement Services"... I see them as criminals and avoid them where possible, but they've taken over so many parking sites now it's getting harder and harder. I hope the Commerce Commission does something about them.

I pay using their app. Once I put the wrong license plate in, and as there was no record of payment I was given a fine, quite fairly. When I said "sorry I put in the wrong number plate" they waived the fine but included a very strongly worded phase that said "if you do this again we won't waive the fine". In general parking companies are just not customer friendly or easy to deal with, because they don't have to be - they're a monopoly and you have no choice but to park with them if you want to drive.

Have got myself or someone else off a Parking Enforcement Services bogus "fine" 3 times now. They huffed and puffed and blustered and threatened each time but finally caved in with a comment that they don't normally waive and usually would go to Small Claims Tribunal where they would normally win. I believe this to be a flat out lie.
