I understood that Lime were responsible for keeping them charged, some guy running running around the city swapping out batteries.

There is some big haters on stuff comments page, makes for classic reading. To be fair i did wonder if they will be available on a Friday/Saturday night after boozey night out, how many will end up on building and car roofs, or in the Avon river after an drunken dare. You can see some idiots will have a great time on them.

I cant wait to give one a blast round.

Y'know I never got used to the fact people dislike bicycles/scooters on the footpath. All those years as a kid being told to always ride on the footpath and never the road. Now you're an adult you get scorn if so much as create a faint tailwind.

Maybe there is during the day but at night I doubt it :) I'm going by the screenshots and info I've seen in the auckland reddit groups.

I got home to a Lime scooter at the end of my driveway last night...I'm in the deepest darkest suburbs of Auckland's North Shore, so not where I would expect to see one.

Thought maybe my kids had found one and left it there, but no - they were unaware.

Long story short, I rented it and me and the kids went for a blat around the neighbourhood at high speed (me still dressed in a suit) and we had a blast - mostly for free, as I had found a bunch of codes online to add credit. All up it ended up costing me just over $2.00 of my own money and we had it for a good while.

I was concerned to see that it was capable of over 30km/h down a slight incline - and I was without a helmet and not really dressed suitably...but had a great time.

Man, did that thing struggle up a hill, though - really lack torque for an electric motor.

They don't work for Lime, they are independent "contractors" like Uber drivers

You sign up to be a lime "juicer" and download an app, you can then go out gathering up scooters after a certain time, ( in the US it was 9pm) Lime pays you to charge them up and deliver them back to designated "lime hub" locations fully charged by 7am....

Apparently its a reasonably profitable "side hustle" in some US cities... but I can't help think that eventually lime will do an Uber and cut the rates it pays out....

I was bought being told it was illegal to ever ride on a footpath - But then I also didnt grow up in Auckland.

Cyclists and kids on scooters do ride them at quite a speed sometimes - and bikes (with quiet tyres) cannot be heard until they barrel past you - god help you if you move left/right to avoid a pothole/dog poo at that moment. Have seen a couple of occasions where kids have been speeding downhill on scooters and narrowly missed cars coming out of driveways.

The roads arent safe but I dont really think its safe to ride scooters/bikes on footpaths either.

Maybe we should just ban cars from the roads and let them use the roads!

I'm waiting for the post titled "I rented a green scooter and hit a white line at 30KPH in the wet..."

Having done that (hitting white lines, as well as manhole covers) on my motorcycle (660cc) in full gear and still getting a fright (even though I would have been OK with helmet, back protector, gloves, boots, etc.) it won't end up well. Think of cyclists and the amount of skin they lose when hitting gravel.....

Every kid was told/taught in class to ride at a safe speed on the footpath and brake for pedestrians (not that all kids followed this, if the road was empty we'd hoon downhill on them :) ). With the roads around schools being main ones with a 50km/h limit (no school zone except in the back roads) and reasonably large footpaths you'd see schoolkids cruising along at safe speeds, otherwise there'd be nowhere else to go except on the road with drivers doing 50-60.

Had a go on one yesterday instead of running home. 6km took 20min and cost $7, so to expensive for regular usage.

But it was a heap of fun, on the down hills you can easily hit 30km/hr, it really struggles on the uphills and you have to push to keep above 10km/hr. Waiting at lights suck but I wasn't ready to mix with traffic on the road. Perfect for whipping up the road for lunch i.e. Epsom to Newmarket.

I've used a few here in San Diego in recent days. I love the concept but they're not cheap and it seems the only people actually making money are the ones collecting the scooters and charging them.

They are a slow motion train wreck though - there are literally thousands and thousands of the things here in San Diego from about 4 or 5 competing companies. I counted them on my 30 min walk back to the hotel last night and counted around 300 of them.

I'm not however keen to use them regularly with the risk involved. My 1cover policy treats them as a bicycle at present, but with the huge numbers of accidents that are occurring I can't imagine this will be the case for too much longer.

true but since you can hire them with a debit card that lowers the age to 15 straight away.

This probably shouldn't make me smile but it did.

Saw a surly yoof on an electric scooter yesterday (Wellington, not branded, so I assume it was his). Complete with hoodie up and faint wisp of hair on upper lip. He was being a bit of a boof head, accelerating stupidly in a crowded shopping area with kids about.

Then he got his comeuppance when he drove straight into a pole.

Not a big pole either, like a 6 cm wide pole holding a temporary bus stop sign. I doubt he could have managed it again if he tried.

Then he slunk away as everyone laughed at him.
