It was never suggested they didn't stop. It is quite plausible that the hotel (or person dropping of the car) supplied them with a packed lunch.

I'm very disappointed to have to mention it again. Intermittent fasting people.

I expect that the government doesn't want to look into this at all. The last thing they want is anyone to conclude that they had to stop for fuel somewhere.

I would expect the investigation is done by the ministry of health contract tracing center rather then the politicians themselves.

If they gave the full story in the press conference. eg the make and model of car, and if they had petrol cans in the car, then it would have been the end of the story.

Firstly it is entitled "Mythbusting", but did not bust any myths.

Secondly it wrongly states that the cars fuel consumption calculator is based on a theoretical maximum. In reality they are set to provide a best guess including things like air con use.

Thirdly it states that the trip is a tall order in a petrol car. Most new petrol cars have a range over 800km (some like the new camry have a range over 1000km extra urban). Hardly a tall order to do such a trip.

Fourthly the premise (1 tank of fuel) ignores that the car may have been provided with a tote tank of fuel in the boot.

Finally I expect the government has looked it this in a fine level of detail. If the vehicle used had insufficient range they would look into it further.

The trip is nothing like a tall order in a petrol car, which just goes to show how stupid some of the people at Stuff are, despite what they try and tell you otherwise. In 2017 I purchased a 2012 Nissan March from a dealership in Manukau. It came with a full tank of gas. I flew up from Wellington and ubered to the dealership after which I drove up to Ellerslie to drop an effects pedal off to a mate. Then I drove back down to Wellington. Two toilet stops - one in Tirau, one in Hunterville. Made it back to Wellington with a quarter tank left. And let's just say I was driving far from efficiently.

My personal best in my Corolla is 817kms on 46L. And I've done that trip in a 3.0 V6 Accord on a tank too.

I remember ads a few years ago (Hyundai?) for 'Auckland to Timaru on one tank'. I don't understand why people think that Auckland to Wellington is some sort of impossibility.

It is also not just distance, but also terrain, as you can use a lot more gas driving uphill. Also can come down to driving style.

I've done Auckland to Wellington on a single tank of gas in a 2004 Subaru. I remember a TV ad, pre 1993 that advertised a new model of a car that could do Auckland to Wellington on a single tank, no idea if it was particularly fuel-efficient or just had a large tank.

The only real question if they stopped to eat or got to the toilet, both they could do on the side of the road.

Obviously. I've been able to get the car under 5s for several hundred k's as well (never a whole tank), but certain trips you're always going to use more gas. But Auckland to Wellington is pretty mellow really, even accounting for the Desert Plateau.

Yeah, it's odd.

Possibly because most people would fuel up en route if they did that trip. Either because the didn't start with a full tank, or because they know that fuel is cheaper if you buy it between the Auckland and wellington.

I once drove form wellington CBD to Auckland CBD at night, standard car took about 9 hours with 1 and a half tanks

to be perfectly honest, i cant remember the last time i had contact with anyone filling up my car , i swipe my card, fill up and leave.
