Another stupid article from Stuff.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/121853342/mythbusting-can-you-drive-auckland-to-wellington-on-one-tank-of-fuel

Personally, the whole thing is a shambles, but why is everyone going on about this? Auckland to Wellington is very doable on one tank. All three vehicles I own could do this on a tank. I get around 550km a tank in my main driver and thats town driving. On the open road I would easily get 650km+.

Anyone know think otherwise?

You complain about why everyone is going on about this, then start a discussion thread on the topic?

Yes there are plenty of cars that can do this.  End of.

The thread was really just a reality check rather than a discussion about whats occured.

FWIW The people going on about it think its not feasible whereas I think its very easily doable.

My Nissan 1.5 Tiida 2006 can do this with ease. we did it 18 months or so ago, filled up at the Mobil by Te Pappa, and still had about 1/4 of a tank in Auckland.

I did this in about 2003 - 2004 in a brand new Holden Commodore and still had enough to Drive from Welly CBD to Hutt Valley and around

I didn't think that my petrol CX-5 could do it until I crunched the numbers. It turns out it's entirely achievable.

Also, everyone is assuming that the trip was Auckland CBD to Wellington CBD but, for all we know, it might have been Pukekohe to Porirua. In other words, depending on the exact origin and destination the trip could well have been less than 600km.

2006 Peugeot 407 diesel did Christchurch to Auckland on 2/3rds a tank about 4 years ago when I bought it off my parents.

October last year did Auckland to Blenheim on 3/4 a tank with a 2019 Holden Acadia.

Its perfectly achievable.

But can you do it on one stomach?  It's a long way to go without stopping for food.

Correct. So that saves any time/gas getting out of the CBD. They ended up in the Hutt Valley, a GPS or someone from Wellington wouldve gone over SH58 if going to the Hutt.

Not if they were practising intermittent fasting.

Christchurch to Rotorua on 1 tank in a Honda Accord. 880km.

would be easily doable in 30-50% of cars out there.

The article is stupid.

Firstly it is entitled "Mythbusting", but did not bust any myths.

Secondly it wrongly states that the cars fuel consumption calculator is based on a theoretical maximum. In reality they are set to provide a best guess including things like air con use.

Thirdly it states that the trip is a tall order in a petrol car. Most new petrol cars have a range over 800km (some like the new camry have a range over 1000km extra urban). Hardly a tall order to do such a trip.

Fourthly the premise (1 tank of fuel) ignores that the car may have been provided with a tote tank of fuel in the boot.

Finally I expect the government has looked it this in a fine level of detail. If the vehicle used had insufficient range they would look into it further.

It was never suggested they didn't stop. It is quite plausible that the hotel (or person dropping of the car) supplied them with a packed lunch.

I've done it a few times, particularly on longer drives, my Atenza does just shy of 850KM on a tank of 98...

But I do like to fill up before desert road, just because..... It would suck to be that poor sod stuck on the side of the road there!
