[snip]...

They said the rear rotors are too rusted to pass a warrant.

.....

Do you use the vehicle with any kind of regularity? If so then I don't buy this.

A vehicle would have to be sitting unused for a significant amount of time for rust to build up on brake rotors to the extent that it would required replacing.
Every time you drive a vehicle the brakes are cleaned.

If DIY is not your thing then definitely get a second quote.

I DIY'd replacing all pads & rotors, and brake fluid a few years back on the Mondeo. All up, parts were under $500 and it took a couple of hours of my time.

It's not a hard job at all, just pay attention to what you're doing. Especially with the bleeding.

I'm a big fan of being able to DIY where possible. You gain a better understanding of your vehicle, and can save a bucket load of money for trivial work.

That depends on the quality of the cast iron. The original front rotors on our 2008 car used to get scabby rust on the back side. The pad got worn away. The braking surface progressively moved in from the edge. The replacement rotors didn't do this.

This is the visible side not looking that flash either. Weta was there when they came off.

It cost me just over $1000 all up to get pads/rotors/bleed done on a 2008 Mitsubishi approx 6 months ago at a brake specialist.

Are you taking this to a dealer or a regular garage

how often do you use such garage?

Are they quoting top spec pads and rotors or like for like OEM or after market ?

you need to balance out what matters….performance of brakes and longevity or just a quick cheap fix so you can do it all again in a few years time….. all depends on how you drive!

given it’s a ford focus, they are semi “euro”.  How many km’s has it done?

I used aftermarket rotors and pads on the VW that the mechanic said are ok to save some money. What a mistake. They had the odd effect of squealing when braking in reverse motion. When I say squealing i mean neighbours all down the street had teeth falling out. Fingernail on blackboard but worse.

I looked on a VW forum "This describes every VW made in at least the last 5 years. It's completely "normal"." remark circa 2014.

The car has done 190k and is 17 years old. I told them I only want a fix for 3-5 years max.

I said I don't need top of the line pads or rotors and they said for my car there are only a couple of options with little price difference anyway.

I take it to this garage once a year - it's a regular garage but prob on the larger side for a local place.

... yet I only had the issue after those rotors and pads went on...

I bought my V8 diesel Touareg in 2019. The seller shared all the dealer service history and the last service sheet had an advisory note stating that all pads and rotors would need to be replaced at the next service, with a quote provided of over $4000!!

Obviously I used this as a major bargaining chip to get a discount, and walked away with $7k off asking price for that and a few other minor issues. I was warned the "brake service required" light was liable to come on at any moment soon. That was July 2019. The light did not come on until November 2022 so I got an additional 3 years longer than the dealer estimated.... go figure.

When the light did come on, I took it to a non dealer VW specialist. They replaced the pads with VW genuine pads for around $1000 and said the rotors can wait another year. (expected to be around another $1000). So the total cost will be half what the main dealer quoted and - 3-4 years later than when they said it would be required.

These are big 4-pot Brembo brakes designed to stop a 2.2 tonne SUV on a dime, so it's obviously not as cheap to service these brakes as say a Corolla.

At least they weren't the infamous ceramic discs on the Touareg R50 or the Audi Q7 V12. They were crazy prices.

i had brembo discs fitted to the ute. there was the option of a lot cheaper brand discs, but they have higher failure rate. odds are you could have used much cheaper brand if you wanted and that makes the price not much different from a corrolla.

don't get that much these days.

rule of thumb for utes was pad change at 200k, disc and pad at 400k.  now days its more like disk and pads at 100k.
