networkn: Same with me, I literally wouldn't get on a qantas plane for a million dollars.

I have five Qantas flights in the next three weeks and I'm not worried in the slightest. The pilots have absolutely no desire to take an aircraft which will put their lives in danger.

Qantas is a big airline with a large fleet so "unusual" events are actually quite common, and they have the unfortunate privilege of being a favorite target of the Australian media, making minor events get blown out of proportion.

penultimate: good for you, you won't convince me that it's normal for so many issues to occur, nor will I get on an Qantas plane. They used to have an excellent safety record and now they don't.

...and they have the unfortunate privilege of being a favorite target of the Australian media, making minor events get blown out of proportion.

They also have the unfortunate privilege of being the target of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association with which there has been a long running industrial dispute in part relating to outsourcing of maintenance and who make sure Qantas remains a favourite target of the media (lots of links from Google if anyone doubts).

A lot of these issues only come to the fore if there are little types on or off the plane who lap up the chance to see or hear themselves in the media ("Look everyone, that's me on TV making a dick of myself"), are inclined to panic, cry and scream, or have some ulterior motive such as a union may do.

I also have no problems whatsoever flying Qantas.

LOL, well spotted. I guess they meant the faulty engine :)

They could always just fly the plane to Auckland on one engine.

I see the media are claiming

"Mike O'Donnell, who was sitting near the front of the aircraft, said that after
landing in Hamilton the pilot told passengers it was the first time an Air New
Zealand 737 had had a total loss of engine. "[He said] we were part of history." "

I don't know where that comes from because I have been on an Air NZ Boeing 737 which suffered the total loss of an engine and it was not that one.

Qantas have a very average safety record amongst the top tier of airlines these days.

You wanna fly them, hey all power to you, it's your life. All the same, I'll stick with staying right away from them.

Assuming that you will be self fulfilling your claimed need for accuracy in the matter I am looking forward to seeing the independantly researched data you have and will be posting comparing their "safety record" against other airlines.

Qantas have never lost a jet because they've spent hunge amounts of money just to keep that claim to fame.

Their 747 "Golf Buggy" that overshot the runway in Bangkok was the most expensive repair bill ever for a plane just so it wasn't scapped. Their repair bill for their A380 won't be much less than the cost of a new one!

AirNZ has a better overall and current safety record than Qantas. All planes will eventually have some issues, it's part of the assumed risk of hurtling through the air at 700kmph in a metal tube, however, I not only prefer AirNZ's safety rating, but I prefer them as an airline. It's almost always a pleasure to fly with them.

Exactly what 'rating' are we talking about here? You still haven't disclosed your basis for calculating the relative safety of the two airlines.

The reality is that major incidents are so rare that there isn't a sufficient statistical base for comparing them, and minor incidents tend to go under the radar unless the media decides to make a song and dance about them.

AirNZ also has a much smaller fleet and route network.

Absolutely. Which is why it's not exactly unusual for an airline to have events. Many of which are routine.

networkn: however, I not only prefer AirNZ's safety rating, but I prefer them as an airline. It's almost always a pleasure to fly with them.

I prefer NZ to Qantas, however Airpoints is a joke of a loyalty program.
