I was quite surprised by the attention. The traditional car dealership model wouldn't be interested in people on holiday... Obviously Tesla's strategy

As others have said, 7.3c/km RUC's makes the likes of a prius cheaper (or similar) to run than an EV . Obviously this would put people off...

EPA rated (combined cycle) consumption for a 30 kWh leaf is 18.7 kWh /100km, which works out to 5.35kM / kWh. Well done if you do.

On the other side of the coin, My 24/7 per kWh cost for electricity is 15.74c. I Imagine going on a day / night rate would give much cheaper off peak power.

I was in Auckland just this past weekend and made a point of visiting the Tesla store but I had this very quote in mind. After chatting with the guy about the Model Y (2-3 years away from NZ), comparing the boot of the Model 3 (useless for dog transport) with the Model X (perfect for dog transport!) he says - "You're more than welcome to take one for a test drive, you don't need to be in the market". Might have helped wifey was with me, spending time to get the Model X seat setup with just the right amount of lumbar support... Wife Approval Factor cannot be underestimated!

I am sure I'd be OK to get a Model X test drive, it's the Model 3 that seems in demand right now. Unsure, as I didn't follow up esp since I haven't got space for an X series in my garage.

You're right. There is about 8% loss between the wall and the battery. I usually ignore it to keep it simple. It's not a big problem when talking about 20kWh vs 18.5kWh stored....when trying to convey a new concept.

EPA ratings are too harsh for the NZ context. We just can't drive as fast as Americans can on the long, straight continental-scale highways. My typical efficiency for an entire month - city and highway - is about 6km / kWh......but I do far more highway driving than most LEAF owners.....so many easily reach 7km or even 8km / kWh with the car mainly being a city car and being driven at urban speeds. Many EVs are more efficient than the LEAF. A Hyundai IONIQ easily meets and beats 7km/kWh. That's how it eaily has 15% or more range over the 30kWh LEAF despite having essentially the same about of battery available. The IONIQ also has more aggressive regen....and that improves overall efficiency, too.

So they must be assuming a lower level of efficiency. Even at 6.5 km / kWh the total is still $282.

The numbers are very real. An EV charged at home is *vastly* cheaper than a car that uses fossil fuels.

Is that including the EA levy and lines charge?

A substantial (hundreds) number of Model 3's destined for customers have arrived in NZ this month.

As of 7 August, there were only 3 model 3's on the NZTA motor vehicle register, It will be very interesting to see the September update and exactly how many did arrive in August...

I don't include the EA levy and lines charge because they are fixed amounts for the connection (at my house, anyway) and I'd be paying them even if I didn't have an EV. They aren't relevant as additional costs incurred because I have an electric car.

Looks like September may be the big month.....though it will depend on what's on whatever ships that arrive. Mine won't be here until late October.

Any idea how much 'error' is in your 'late October' estimate? Have you been given a firm bracket of dates by Tesla?

The day I ordered (20/8) I spoke to Gillian at Tesla NZ. She said they had just moved the delivery window for new orders to mid / late October. This should be reflected on the expected delivery month on the web site.
