willing to compromise on the horrible lack of buttons and speedometer if it meets the needs

I challenge you to keep track of how many of those buttons in your current vehicle you actually use and the frequency 😉

every single time. i drive the leaf about 2-5 times a day, this is what i do

days in dunedin car range from -4 in morning to 45C when sunny in your winter day i don't park in garage

steering wheel heater on + off.

These are all buttons that you can pin to the bottom bar of the Model Y's screen. Just a tap away.

air heater in morning, air cond in the afternoon, air cond off when temperature is right.

blow feet if feet cold, blow hand if hand cold (wheel heater not enough), blow window if fogging up.

I've never found the need to manually control this in my Model 3. I've had the temp set to what I find comfortable (22) since I got it and it handles blowing the air in the right places at the right temp, and this has been true when I lived in Auckland and now Christchurch. Occasionally in the summer I find I need to boost the fan speed after I've been at the gym because it doesn't account for me feeling hotter than what it may otherwise think.

aim vents at wherever i need to aim.

Again, I personally don't find the need to fiddle with the aim of the vents since my seat is always in the same position and I'm always the same height. If my partner has been driving then it restores my settings for me when I get in.

central locking lock/unlock (pick up kids for car pooling)

There is a dedicated button on the main screen for this

turn on light in the dark, turn off light in the light.

Headlights? Those are auto and generally very good at knowing when to come on and go off

change songs on steering wheel.

change volume when song too loud/soft.

The scroll wheels on the steering wheel can control this.

eco mode off when i want to floor the car to pull out of a busy junction, or other situations which is not uncommon in hilly city driving.

regen stronger when i want, weaker when i don't want.

No need to worry about these in the Model Y

wiper speed, wiper on/off/auto. rear wiper.

While the auto-wipers do need improvement, you can pin their controls to the bottom bar of the main screen. Generally you don't need to faff with them tho.

My aftermarket HUD solves the speedometer ‘problem’.

After 24 hours with the M3 and the MY apperars to be the same, it was the lack of some displays in front of the driver I personally found the most annoying.   The aftermarket HUD's look cool but why should you have to do that on such an expensive vehicle?  IMHO only

Because if you put all the extras on, a $80K car quickly becomes a $100K car. The Polestar, with its ‘packs’ is a good example of this.

The Tesla assembly line keeps costs down and production rates up by restricting order options. I do wish there were officially supported retrofit options.

I look at my Model 3 as a $45K car with a $30K battery in it.  If you want $10K worth of extras then you would need to accept a smaller $20K battery with 2/3rds of the range if it’s done at build time.

Not sure what your point is in relation to my post? My comment was relating to Tesla keeping costs down by limiting purchase options and extras.

AFAIK the Y is not available in the US market in a single motor variant, the EV6 is. Tesla no longer qualifies for a federal rebate because they have sold too many cars, Kia does.

Your contributions to this thread are bordering on ………

An Aus comparison review between the MY RWD and the Polestar 2 single motor long range:

https://www.drive.com.au/reviews/2022-polestar-2-v-tesla-model-y-comparison/

Even though this has close relevance to NZ (given we are some of the few markets with the RWD version of the Y), it’s still quite a different comparison given the pricing differential with the Y (currently) being eligible for the govt rebate while the Polestar 2 is no longer thanks to recent price increases.

And that’s before factoring in the cost of the Polestar’s additional packages to gain features standard even on the entry-level Y (need the ‘Plus’ pack to get heat pump, glass roof, wireless phone charging, heated steering wheel and rear seats, and superior stereo; and the ‘Pilot lite’ pack to get adaptive cruise control and pilot assist [but at least that also comes with RCTA, something not available on the Y at all]).

Anyway, putting price aside, I’m not sure how much these two models are in competition with each other - wouldn’t the 3 be a more logical comparison?

Edit: This highlights the cost difference between these two models:

Prices have risen as a result of the changes, with only one model now falling under the $80,000 Clean Car Programme limit for the $8625 rebate, that being the Standard range Single motor ($76,900). You can add the Pilot Lite pack ($79,900 total) and still get a rebate, which includes extra active safety stuff like lane centring, 360-degree cameras, cross traffic alerts on top of the standard adaptive cruise control, blind spot alert and park assist functions.

Adding the Plus pack – a better sound system, panoramic glass roof and nicer seats – bumps the price to $86,900, the same price as the Long range Single motor with the Pilot Lite pack. Putting both extra packs on the Long range Single motor pushes the cost to $94,900, while adding an extra motor to the fray also adds an extra digit to the price, asking $104,900.

Source: https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/128797913/polestar-tweaks-the-2-including-the-price

So the entry-level Model Y (white) is $78243 or $69,618 after rebate; the mid-range Polestar as in this review (which, power-wise, is closer to the Y RWD) with both packages added is $94,900.

here's the tesla specs https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-56562137-FC31-4110-A13C-9A9FC6657BF0.html

https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-E47C4A6D-528E-419C-8C57-FD3864644C34.html

model 3 shoulder width 1372 hip width 1331

model y shoulder width 1373 hip width 1286mm

i guess there's no need to measure tesla has already measured

if one does not need boot space and have no problem with sitting lower down model 3 is a no brainer, most efficient car of anything currently made by a country mile

So what accessories do people that have bought the Model Y get for their car, and why?

So far I have bought:

  • Front mud flaps from Tesla
  • Center console trays from Tesla
  • 16A Caravan plug for the mobile connector from Tesla
  • Tesla mobile connector & cable holder from Tessories
  • Seat belt insert from Tessories
  • Rubber Cup Holder Insert from Tessories
  • Tesla jack pads from Tessories

Will probably get trunk storage bins, rear trunk linkers (including for the backseats), and sunshades for all windows including the glass roof.

Possibly getting floor mats as well.

Seem to be on the getting accessories ride here...

I have most of the above for my Model 3, but would suggest a screen protector - my preference is matte, hides fingerprints and avoids glare.

In addition to the trunk liner I also have a frunk liner, which stops things sliding around and prevents the plastic surface underneath from getting scratched.

As you know, I’ve bought a few things… In many cases ‘why?’ is easily answered by ‘because I have dirty children’, others are practical such as ‘because my wife wants a speedo in front of her when driving’, but in many others it’s ‘because I have a problem’, which becomes obvious when looking at the following…

I’ve bought most from Ali Express; the items from Tessories are often an ok price, but they have been really slow off the mark getting MY-specific products in stock. A majority of my items have already arrived, while apparently Tessories will have MY stock in around the middle of Aug (and my car’s delivery window is 6-20 Aug).

Still to buy:
Boot side storage containers
Door cavity liners
Spare key
Type 2 - Type 2 cable (maybe?)
Rear trunk privacy cover
Aircon inlet cover (maybe?)

Bought thus far:
Trunk mat; frunk mats; floor mats
Back seat protectors
rear seat boot protectors
Mudguards
Jack pads
Centre console storage boxes
Cupholder liner
Under seat storage
Wheel caps
Puddle lights
SD card; Raspberry Pi (for TeslaUSB)
Glossy screen protector
Matte screen protector
Trim removal kit
Roof sunshade cover
Front footwell lights
Pedal covers
Phone holder
Tyre tube extender
Boot light
Windscreen shade
Blue adapter (16A)
Key card holders
Rear seat storage container
Garage cable organiser
Front seat cushions
Suction/magnets for sunshade
HUD
Rear aircon vent covers
Frunk hooks
USB rear light
9v tyre compressor

It’s quite possibly too late for that! I guess that, as far as addictions/weird behaviours go, it’s better than falling down the anti-Covid rabbit hole or many other obsessions!

Just paid for the car’s insurance and decided to add a bit more to cover those accessories.
