Jase2985:

The downer guy i spoke to up here said asphalt was about 3-4x the cost of chip seal but generally lasts about 3-4 times longer. so cost for cost is about the same in the long run, just less disruption for drivers.

the stuff uses on the Waikato expressway is semi porous to help it shed water better when it rains.

Not sure how current this is but from NZTA's web site on highway surface selection

I read that as talking about the base layer for the major highways, not the surface layer.

On chch new sothern motorway it was chipseal for a bedding period, Then asphalt was later added on top. I assume Transmission Gulley will get fully asphalt after winter?

My understanding is the plan is for it to remain chipseal.

The Wellington region appears to be moving to chip seal even on previously asphalted surfaces to make the subcontractors more money by having to relay sections every 6 months.

The cynic in me wonders whether the contractors also own windscreen replacement businesses…!

It could also be a function of outcomes based contracts. So long as the road meets the requirements for grip, water shedding etc the builders will naturally spend the bare minimum to achieve sign off. If they can do that with chipseal then presumably they pass and that's what we get.

Also punts any long-term quality problems down the road for future bureaucrats to deal with. As far as the govt is concerned, the road is built and open.

I can see this being a long drawn out issue. Did they not learn anything from the surface problems with the new Kapiti part of SH1

I wonder if google maps not recognizing the new road yet is caused by the lack of mobile coverage on it. As Google hasn't seen people driving on it, it can't tell it's open.

That small section in the map above is at the Porirua end and has plenty of mobile coverage, hopefully it will come right in the next few days

I've been seeing and testing out google maps over the last two days. Seems to be finally suggesting transmission gully as a default route now when I ask for directions between wellington and levin (and without looping around and going up the off ramp). So looks like they have finally sorted it's data out?
