If you liked the 3, you'll love the Y. I switched between the two in the showroom and was reminded how the cabin in the 3 is not that big, in particular the rear seats and how high the rear footwell is.

The Y lets you actually sit in the rear seats and have your legs rest on the seat, rather that have knees up in the air.

The only concern I've heard about the Y (that I can't confirm without a test-drive) is the road noise, and some 'booming' that can happen due to the shape of the glass roof. Apparently the boot also has very soft surrounds and acts like a giant speaker cone if you go over bumps - best methods to resolve include adjusting the rubber stops to hold it firmer, adding 3d printer surrounds to the stops to make them firmer still, or inserting vinyl tubes inside the boot seal (via existing openings) to make the seal harder too. This is also the reason why I am interested in the parcel shelf as further absorbant material in the back might help.

I've seen the noise-kits that have several rubber seals to add, but the YT video I watched saw minimal impact if any on recorded noise.

Good to know! I’ve got two boys, the oldest of which I already feel has outgrown the legroom in the back of our current car, so I’m sure this will be a much more acceptable space for him and his brother. (They’re just disappointed that the rear screens that have been speculated aren’t a real thing; I think the more practical issues will be things like the lack of rear controls for the rear heat vents and seat heaters - something where the BT buttons could come in handy.)

It’ll be interesting to hear how bad the road noise is, especially given NZ’s road surfaces! (Have any NZ reviews commented on this?) I saw what could be the same video re effectiveness of adding a second seal, so that doesn’t seem worth it. But can you please point me in the direction on content on the other means to address potential road noise issue? I’ve no idea what surrounds are or where one would put stops or additional surrounds!

(While ugly and lacking flexibility, an advantage of the Tesla-designed cargo cover is that it’s more of a solid material, so could well have a bigger impact on noise.)

Is it common for such an install to come without a ball mount? Wonder if they will sell that as well, Toyota sold me everything I needed when I bought a tow bar from them.

Just as well it doesn’t need to be ordered with the car, otherwise bye bye rebate.

Our Polestar2 arrived with the removable drawbar as we ordered, as the retractable version was 50mm ball option only. The drawbar was supplied with both a 50mm and a 1 7/8" ball to fit as we chose to.

Is it possible that Tesla's US heritage has caused the situation due to health and safety implications in the US?

We were assured by Polestar that the $2,800 towbar as a removable accessory wasn't factored into the purchase price for rebate purposes. We were originally contemplating a LRSM which at that time would have breached the $80,000 threshold with the additional cost of a towbar.

That's damn expensive. Will probably get a 3rd party one that permanently sticks out with the towball so you get a bit of protection in a rear end. Has saved me a few times in my current car with people hitting me from behind.

I haven't seen any NZ reviews note the road noise, and to be fair the Model Y has come a long way in the last few years, in particular solid casting of rear base that was supposed to reduce NVH.

Here was the post I saw discussing the boot tube solution - amongst the others.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/s2cn04/guys_i_think_ive_solved_the_booming_interior/

Further thread hear indicates positive results with parcel shelf, and maybe Tesla are solving this problem themselves in manufacture now...

That foam backing road looks to be for sale here at hardware stores etc.

Keep in mind that some wizardry is required to tell the car that the trailer behind you isn't a close following vehicle or there will be complications.

Yeah, you get a Trailer mode unlocked in the UI that stops the proximity sensors screaming. It also adjusts some of the safety features to take into account the extra load of the trailer. Details here

However, there's no reason Tesla couldn't unlock this feature for third pary tow bars.

For a fee of course.

So a third party towbar, which I assume will need some sort of certification, plus the unlock fee and you are probably going to get close to the official one’s cost.

By what Obraik linked from the owner’s manual the tongue limit looks like 79kg (two occupants) which would mean a gross trailer weight of 800kg using the 10% load rule. About half the rated tow limit of 1600kg. Or am I reading that wrong? (Wouldn’t be the first time).

I saw earlier today this had been added. Yeah, nah - I’m not willing to pay anything like that for a tow bar. I’ve already made contact with the person who seems to do a majority of the installs on M3s (and has just this week put one on the first MY in the country; it’s a UK import). He also travels the country doing installs, and I’ve asked him to include me in his first run after the first MY shipment. IIRC the cost was $1,100 for a similar style (removable; panel pops back on and nothing’s visible).

@droidxt - he also does a standard fit one as well (I can forward you the details if you like?); personally, I’m willing to trade that risk of damage to the car for avoiding damage to my shins, which I’ve done enough times with my current one!

I’m used to the proximity sensors going off when reversing with a trailer with my current car, so think I can cope with that - or do the Teslas’ sensors still go off when in drive?! Are there any other gotchas I need to think about?

I also won’t use it much on the open road - it’s more for trips to the dump, shifting furniture etc - so don’t think the other programming that will come with the official Tesla update will be critical - but still it would be good if one that that’s offered more widely.

Model Y (and I assume M3?) pick-up dates are now being offered for Auckland vehicles (boat due in Akld in a couple of days, I think); really limited options being provided, so that’s stuffed up an all-family roadie!

That said, both my boys are surprisingly ok about missing a day and half of school, so I’ve booked the three of us flights to at least have an overnight stay and drive home the next day. That’ll be 9.5 weeks from the date orders opened to picking the car up (and even shorter for some) - not bad, given the long wait others (including M3) purchasers are currently experiencing.

I test drove a model Y a few weeks back, put one on order after waiting for Nov-Dec delivery time as that's when it would suit me. One thing my partner noticed, she usually rides in the back of our current car with the baby and the model Y back seats have a shorter bench and leg support than our current VW (2014 Golf Wagon). Not terrible, but definitely not as comfortable.
