Agree. Aotea (Porirua) to Waikanae now sends me via Waitangirua interchange. Coastal route 31 min-37.9K, TG 30 min-37.9K.

BUT, the time doesn't take into account the snarlups I have been in on the coastal route! SH1 for me everytime.

Edit to add. The coastal route is devoid of cars and trucks now. GREAT relief to the coastal villages.

alavaliant: I've been seeing and testing out google maps over the last two days. Seems to be finally suggesting transmission gully as a default route now when I ask for directions between wellington and levin (and without looping around and going up the off ramp). So looks like they have finally sorted it's data out?

Still missing the southbound interchange with SH58 for me on Google maps.

Directions from Lower Hutt to Levin correctly shows SH2->SH58->SH1.

Coming back tells me SH1 all the way down Ngauranga Gorge and back up SH2.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

They just have to get the southbound ramps at the SH 58 junction added, they have been notified.

Looking forward to travelling on this later this month. I didn't actually realize it is basically identical length to the other route - sort of assumed it was going to be much more direct, but I know the distance isn't the point.

Wonder how long it will take Google to get traffic data. Was expecting that sort of right away.

I imagine now there will be pretty bad traffic jams coming off the Mackays to Peka Peka section during busy times until that's completed?

When is that expected to be done, was it the end of this year? I see the Otaki to N Levin is still 'by the end of the decade'. Surely they could pull finger and get that happening sooner.

Yeah TG isn't much of a time saving. Unless traffic is heavy where it's additional capacity prevents the traffic jams at both ends of the coastal route that used to happen. So a friday evening northbound journey on a long weekend will no longer be a slow journey where it used to be.

btw - Mackays to Peka Peka is already open (that's the 'Kapiti Expressway' that goes around Waikanae and Paraparaumu). I think you are referring to Peka Peka to Ōtaki, which I suspect the congestion around the construction site there and the Ōtaki township will not be any worse with TG open - as it is effectively a separate traffic jam on it's own.

Roger that - yeah I was meaning coming off the Peka Peka end of the Mackays to Peka Peka section where it goes down from 4 lanes to 2. Now that the rest of the road back to Wellington is all minimum 4 lanes, I expected the rush hour northbound traffic to get to that area faster/at the same time rather than it be slowed down & spread out with the various bottlenecks around the coast, especially coming up the hill into Pukerua Bay. But if it's not that bad, that's fantastic.

I got a ten or eleven minute saving over the weekend, which is pretty significant over 27km.

(That saving is based on my old fashioned satnav's expected arrival time when passing Mackay's Crossing vs its expected arrival time when passing Porirua. I didn't update the maps until this morning.)

I started this thread with some photos taken from Whitby when the road was still closed.  Here are some nightshots taken from the same position now that it's open.

Looks to me like they have added that missing southbound interchange now?

As predicted the Easter traffic is horrendous with northbound already backed up to the Waikanae intersection from PekaPeka and it's only 10.30.

Add 90 minutes to your journey.
