My OBD dongle arrived from China today (very quick delivery - 7 days from order to arrival!). Plugged it in and my batteries are at 90% SOH. Not quite what I was hoping for but not too bad. The car has done 13,000kms so will be interesting to see when that first bar (of 12) drops off. 

I have only installed the Leaf View (Lite) to check it was working. What do I get by buying the full/pro versions? At $17/$25 it is not the cheapest app on my phone!

From the app description it looks like the Pro version allows you change auto-door lock/unlock settings (what is this?), read DTCs (but not reset them yet), and register tire positions (not sure why you would want to do this?). 

Is it worth the extra money for the PRO version?

90% is pretty solid.

I must admit not thinking twice about forking out for the Pro version of Leafspy - seemed a trivial amount compared to how much the car costs. It is by far my most expensive app though (there's an idea for another thread...).  I find screen 3 and 4 informative especially as it reports kWh - we talk about % charge used for journeys, but the true currency is kWh i.e. 10% on a 24 kWh with SOH 100% is different to SOH 80% (and very different to a 30 kWh battery or those Tesla mega-batteries).

re auto-door lock setting, apparently some Leafs auto-lock all doors when the car exceeds some speed. Haven't noticed it on mine, don't know if it's a good thing or represents some malfunction. It's also supposed to report tyre pressures, but again either TPMS not fitted on mine or has stopped working.

Yeah fair point about the extra $8 - it is funny how *tight* people are (me incl!) when it comes to shelling out money for apps.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, I think I will just go for the PRO.

What I would really like to do is somehow pull out the data from the app and publish to my MQTT broker - where I can then log it and monitor it in my home automation system.

Doubt this is doable however. I wonder if there are some OBD/BT -> Tasker plugins...

I bought the Pro version...I forget why. I hate crippled software. When I strike a situation where I need to do any of those extra things I'll just be able to do it. :-)  

A battery at 90% after 13,000km is strange. It may be a LeafSpy "artifact". 

David Lees (of Volt Vehicles - an EV importer) told me on the weekend that LEAF batteries often differ in LeafSpy, but their range will be the same. A way to test that is to go for a drive - preferably at about 80kph and on flattish ground with no real wind - and return home on less than 10%, then drive around the block until you see the turtle (you'll still have 1 to 5km left, depending on how fast you try to drive. Power is limited. You likely won't get much over 40kph in turtle mode).....and note how far you got. Go home (just around the corner, if you did this right) and charge up all the way.

If you managed to travel about 140km-150km (ECO on) or (probably) more.....you're just fine. LeafSpy may need to be calibrated. If you managed to travel 160km or more, you're absolutely joyously fine. 

Maybe you could post a couple of screen shots. I'll post a couple of my own now. 

This is a screenshot of my Screen 1 in LeafSpy. This was yesterday morning. I'd just fast-charged from 16% to 81% at a nearby fast charger. The modules are in red because they are re-balancing and power is moving around. This screen shows all 96 batteries contained in the 48 physical modules. They should all be roughly the same. If one or more is a LOT higher or lower, then it may indicate a problem battery or module. The display here is fairly normal. There are fluctuations, especially if you are watching in real-time as you as AC charge. Of course the car is off when DC charging so you can't see anything.

(Note the OBDII has it's own battery and when connected to the port and turned on, I suspect the ABB DC fast chargers can see the small amount of power there and may report the car can't charge unless it is turned off. It IS off....but maybe the dongle isn't. I just turn the dongle off and try charging again. It always works.)

My SoH is 100% but if I didn't DC fast charge and only charged at home at 16amps this would fall to about 97% in 2-3 days. A long, deep, battery-draining run, followed by a DC fast charge to about 80% seems to really perk up the stats in the LeafSpy. I donn't know if that's actually good or not, but it feels good to see 100%. (As in other posts, you may have to calibrate leafSpy. The SoH indicated may be due to the defaults in LeafSpy being inappropriate for your battery). 

You can see my car has had 141 DC fast charges and 139 L1 /L2 charges (L1 = 100v-120v - impossible in NZ, but do-able in Japan / North America and L2 = 220v-240v).

Hey guys, looking at getting a leaf for my partner, I've done the math and she drives about 10,000k a year, based off that vs a Ford Ka (the other car she's interested in) it looks like she's $4,000 better off after running costs over 5 years.

Just wondering who are good to deal with in NZ for Leafs, I'd rather do a bit of legwork and save money than go through someone who has awesome customer service but fairly pricy cars (ie http://www.evimports.co.nz/)

Also my partner was wondering what the leafs are like in terms of replacement part prices and availability of people who can do repair work on them. Any feedback from you guys?

I will have to find some time to try out your range test. Where is live is not well suited as I am not near any highways, but there are quite a few hills around so maybe I could burn some juice zipping around them for an hour or so.

Whoever owned this previously (in Japan) obviously had access to a fast charger nearby. Maybe that is what has degraded the batteries a bit more than yours?

So those with a Leaf and the OBD dongle, do you leave it plugged in 24x7 or do you take it out when not actively using it (via LeafSpy)?

I read somewhere that those dongles can drain your battery if left plugged in for long periods of time.
