I don’t know how much ‘pre study’ you have done but there are a couple of great YouTube videos on operating the car that I have linked in the past to help people.

The actual pick up procedure is pretty slick and they are keen to get you out the door. There isn’t time to have a thorough look over the vehicle there and then. There are delivery day checklists (and even apps) available online. In my case I looked for any obvious damage before accepting the vehicle and drove out of the delivery area (which is inside) to the car park where I looked for major defects because you have a week to report anything. If your pick up day is anything like the weather is today in Auckland, good luck with looking at it outside!

Make sure you’ve got the Tesla App loaded on your phone and logged in.

Once you set off it will take a number of kilometres for the cameras to calibrate and the autopilot functions aren’t available until that is complete (I think it was about 10-15km for me).

Not sure how much of your ‘emergency equipment’ you are taking to Auckland with you. I was lucky because my home is within Tesla service area if something went wrong on the drive home.

Shouldn’t get excited by something like a car, but you know………..

@Dingbatt: thanks for these tips - really useful. I have watched a few vids, but not sure if that includes the ones you’d recommend - do you know the YT channels these appear on? (I can easily find them that way.)

Yeah, I need to be prepared for the weather to be crap, given the season; will look to hopefully at least get a chance to give it a one over, or at least get a good number of photos taken of the exterior.

Good point about thinking of what equipment to take - the compressor’s pretty compact, so makes sense to take that.

The plan is to go for a bit of drive after picking it up - and most likely getting a charge so we can set off the next day with a decent starting range (do they charge the cars much or at all before pick-up?); I’ve read enough recently about it making more sense to avoid charging first thing in the morning if it’s cold and the battery hasn’t had a chance to pre-condition.

I have no qualms admitting I’m damn excited about picking the car up! While it is ‘only’ a car at one level, it’s also something quite distinct from the run-of-the-mill vehicle.

Now that delivery is coming ever closer - here is a good walkthrough of some settings you might want to do when you get your Model Y

So Paganella, the ship that brought the first Model Ys to NZ has started offloading the Model Ys today.

Here is a video from a WeChat group, shared on the Tesla Model Y Facebook group.

Ooh ooh! Can we see a parcel shelf? LOL!

Is the FB group an NZ specific one or is it full of worlwide Tesla Bros?

Probably won't know anything about the parcel shelf until the first cars have been delivered to the customers.

I think the chance is fairly high that it will have the parcel shelf, given that UK Model Ys are getting them.

@jonathan18

The instructional videos I found most useful before getting my 3 were by Andy Slye and Everyday Chris. May be a little out of date now due to software updates but the underlying setup tips are still relevant. (Also Kim Java and SaraJAwesome)

My 3 was fully charged when I received it.
As far as a charging strategy goes, there are far more experienced EV owners here than me, but even a reasonable drive after picking your Y up will probably only get you down to 80% (particularly in Auckland traffic!) and I don’t know how effective fast DC charging would be to push it back up to 100%. Unless you are really unlucky to set off on one of the three days Auckland has a frost 😁 I don’t think cold will be a problem. Depending on where your overnight stay is, you may be able to trickle charge and if you set your departure time in the car software, it will precondition as required. (This is not a charge time function I have used, generally I set a start time because my car is garaged.)

Even if you left Auckland with 80%, you are comfortably going to get to Hamilton (if you are planning on using the Tesla SC at Te Awa (The Base). Even if you want to stop before, there are chargers at the top of the Bombays, Hampton Downs and Taupiri that are all less than a km from SH1, so setting out with 100% wouldn’t really be necessary.

Edit: I also renamed one of the (2) trip meters “lifetime” before leaving the pick up centre and have left it running for lifetime stats.

This Monroe video shows how much better the Y is in the structural body, from the 3. Its well worth watching all the way through.

The new casting they are showing off is for the Model Y with structural battery pack. That is not what is being delivered in NZ now.

I would think they have production line runs set up for different markets, or at least allocations and the AU one is more full. Even if the cars for both markets are technically identical, they will be treated as different runs and handled separately.

Either that or there's a hold up on parcel shelves :-D

maybe not many are ordering here?

AU had 7000 orders immediately and they raised the price 2 weeks after launch due to too popular

What store did you order your mats from on ali express? There are a lot to choose from. And price varies widely as well.

It’s been many weeks since I ordered mine, so I’m not sure if there’s a better range of (and better prices for) RHD MY mats - when I bought, there weren’t many to choose from.

I’m happy with the ones I got - they seem decent quality, but it’s difficult to know about actual fit until the car arrives. I got the full MY set from this retailer (and back-of-rear-seat mats from another). Don’t be put off by the photo, which shows LHD for the RHD option - they are indeed RHD!

When do you pick up your Y. Keen to hear how the mats fit before I order. My delivery date isnt until November/December.

17 Aug. Happy to post feedback/photos on here once they're fitted.

Someone on the NZ MY FB group posted a link to a very similar set, but that included the mats for the rear of the back seats for about the same price (so better value). Obviously I'd not be able to comment on the quality of those, though!

NZ deliveries have begun - no parcel shelves, not sure yet if boot trim is the type that can hold the OEM ones..
