martyyn: As predicted the Easter traffic is horrendous with northbound already backed up to the Waikanae intersection from PekaPeka and it's only 10.30.
Add 90 minutes to your journey.
… which is not really anything to do with TG.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
The bottle-neck will just keep creeping north as Highway projects are completed, they should get started on the Otaki to Levin expressway now
What difference the TG has made?

…. which may just move the bottle-neck further north, as you say - but I guess some of the heat will have have been taken out of the traffic by the time it gets there, because people are actually going to Otaki, Levin etc.

A huge amount of traffic turns off to Palmerston North so by the time you're north of Levin traffic is usually pretty good.
Yeah getting it past Levin would for sure make a good difference.
I'm not sure if that looks a lot worse - I've been in traffic there a few years back, no long after the Mackays to Peka Peka section opened, and it was 1st gear or stopped from about where it is on that map currently.
May be a bit of a combination of all the covid restrictions being lifted too, everyone wanting to get away etc. Fingers crossed they pull finger and get the next section underway sooner rather than later.
Drove part of TG today, going from Johnsonville to Brewtown.
Nice road to drive going Linden to SH58 exit.
Felt quicker going that way, rather than the stop start of the motorway going SH1 & SH2.
You know parts of the road is high in part's when you're looking at the tops of the power pylons!

So now, we not only have more traffic but it's all arriving at PekaPeka at the same time.
The current delays are the worst I've seen for a number of years.
The traffic is currently worse at Peka Peka because of the expressway construction... Most of the current SH1 is now speed restricted to no more than 80, often 50, and there are more orange plastic road sticks than the eye can see.
I Hear the government is now talking about making the Otaki-Levin section a toll road.... Although with the current construction timeframe stretching out to 2028-2030, they will have to win a few more elections to actually make it one...

We don't either. Not worth the hassle or the risk.
Sorry but this is funny as hell. 🤣🤣

Google Maps now showing traffic info for Transmission Gully, but it looks like you can see the mobile coverage blackspots too

I've noticed that too.
My observation when driving to Wellington is that South of Auckland the two slowest legs are Taupo to Turangi and the last ~50km leading into Wellington. Both average less then 1km/minute. In very heavy traffic TG will move the bottle neck further North, but I think most of the time it will still help with that last run into Wellington and divert traffic away from some of those communities.

Who teaches cops to drive?
That's two cars that have we know have been crashed in the past few weeks on TG (IIRC the first one went into a gravel trap).
Today I saw a cop (in uniform in a patrol car) execute a u-turn at an intersection while talking on a handheld cell-phone. Motorists had to take evasive action. No lights/siren on. If I'd thought quickly enough to grab the plate number I would have *555 to report it.
