If you have to buy based on the dashboard display alone, use the bars of battery health and assume that it is just about to drop one. It is always displayed on an old Leaf, but on the new Leaf you have to scroll to the right information screen (12 segments on a scale that goes from 0 to 1) and clearly titled "Battery Capacity". I am guessing that they did not photograph this screen on the auction site?

From the MyNissanLeaf forum: The first bar is worth 15% of the battery capacity. The remaining bars (including the 2 red) are each worth 7.5% of the battery capacity.

If the dash display is showing ECO mode (where D normally displays) then the GOM will read about 10% higher than if in D.

Cool, thanks. I'm guessing that would more than account for the difference between the two once you allow for differences in driving style and air con use etc.

Just seemed so weird to have one at 6,000km seeming so much lower than one at 34,000km.

Please don't even look at 6000km vs 34000km. It means nothing.

Hmm that gives me hope my half dead Nissan leaf has done hardly any KS. If I list it for a high price you'd bet someone would buy it thinking its low KS!

I won't do that but I'm sure half the country has no idea

If a seller is displaying the dash display with GOM while in ECO mode I'd be very suspicious of this activity. They are purposely boosting the perceived battery capacity.

To clarify on the point regarding driving immediately prior affecting the GOM display the GOM works by monitoring rate of drawdown on the battery and then calculated how far the current battery charge will allow the car to travel if that rate of demand continues. For example if you're travelling down a reasonable gradient it assumes the same low demand will continue for the remainder of the battery's charge and so the GOM distance will be high as a result.

So, a deceitful seller just needs to travel a few kilometres with minimised demand such as downhill, tailwind, no air-con, gentle throttle, etc and they can 'boost' the GOM display to their advantage.

if i go uphill at 100km/h GOM shows 10kms

if i go uphill at 40km/h GOM shows 26km

if i go on the flat at 40km/h GOM shows 100km

if i go on the flat at 10km/h GOM shows 150km

GOM means nothing

it's like a hybrid car manufacturer advertising it will do 1.6L petrol/100km at WLTP

if he drove around at 10km/h and it shows 150km and you asked him if it will go 150km at 100km/h and he says yes then he's deceitful

if people don't understand GOM and they want to look at the GOM without asking any questions about SOH i don't see how that's deceitful

It is if that's the photo you use to help sell a vehicle. The same as displaying a purposely low L/100km display on an ICE vehicle except the official consumption rate can be googled for any given vehicle in that case.

It is exploiting the lack of knowledge by only showing GOM and no other indicators of battery health. It kind of implies it is meaningful information.

And yes, I know car dealers are not known to be scrupulous and people should educate themselves better. It is a two-way street though.

All you're claiming is that a seller can do whatever they like to improve the perceived SOH of their EV by taking advantage of a buyer's inexperience. Sellers of that ilk are a disgrace to those of us doing our best to convince new owners of the benefits of owning an EV.

In my defense, I'm working with very limited information so just trying to make sense of what I'm looking at, if that's possible.

I think I'm just going to factor in the battery replacement at some point as inevitable and get the one with the better interior and overall condition, that's really all I can do.

If the photos you're being provided include the battery bar indicators on the RHS of the dash display the right one of those two bar displays will give you the best indication of the SOH using the calculation I provided above (i.e. 15% for the first block and 7.5% for each one below that). Not foolproof as sellers have been known to use techniques to temporarily boost this, which is akin to 'speedo winding', but if that all you've got to go by go with that.

Perhaps post a photo or two that you've been supplied here for us to give our advice on. Plenty of Leaf owner experience here by the looks of it.

The OP is dealing with Japanese wholesalers by the sounds of it so the availability of reputable info is not forthcoming.

As a NZ seller if you were to attempt to sell your Leaf using GOM display alone my original advice to any buyer in this discussion would be to walk away. If you're happy to take advantage of an EV newcomers lack of knowledge that's your call.
