The Ioniq is looking very good for NZ. About $60k and lots of range. The only issue is the charging interfaces available in the car aren't CHAdeMo or CCS Type 1, the most of the fast chargers around now can't charge it. That is very annoying.

That is nuts - why bring a car into the country that isn't supported by most of the fast chargers?!?! I was looking at the pictures and that video posted above, and also thought, that it looked like a very nice package...reasonable size, not weird looking, good features etc....but then the charging...argh! doh! fail.

Four new electric car recharge stations are due to arrive at Alpine Energy next week.

Alpine Energy chief executive Andrew Tombs said the first rechargers would be in service before March 31.

This will be great. I'm driving down to Invercargill in April (from Auckland) in my Nisaan LEAF. Each new charger makes it easier.

The only problem right now is how to get from Nelson to Christchurch. Losing SH1 and access to the fast charger in Kiakoura makes it harder.......do-able, but a day slower.

One of the side benefits is I actually have to drive the length of NZ twice - go to Invers from Auckland, drive to Cape Reinga, then drive back to Auckland. That's two. :-)

Really looking forward to it.

I'll pad the numbers for the Dunedin stop/meeting but can't otherwise join it with my Leaf.

If it rains this weekend, might drive to the new Balclutha rapid charger.

Good story about using an EV van for deliveries in Dunedin. The business estimates their Nissan NV200e van saves them $4000-$5000 per year over a non-electric van.

These are the same vans soon to be used by a major supermarket chain for deliveries.

It's happening!

Electric cars sold in the UK in January account for 4.2% of all new cars sold....of any kind.

....and in the US, Forbes says EV sales are up 70% year-on-year at the end of January.

I guess it would be prohibitively expensive to ship a kit to NZ, but the electric car conversion of VW beetles does appeal to me

It's probably slightly safer to use a 1968 or later VW Beetle, which has a double jointed axle.

A swing axle plus doubling the torque / HP in a 1967 and earlier VW could be a bit squirrelly to drive

Obviously with an almost complete lack of safety equipment, save seatbelts, it would be bad in a crash.
