with pp2O being completed this year (they are currently putting up wire ropes and signs), the travel experience for those on the Coast will be hugely better.

I didn't realise that was progressing so fast. The latest update on the website says paving will be complete by August 2022.

I guess they were just being conservative. This is the March 22 Update Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway (createsend.com) - scroll to bottom. Maybe the April update will be more bullish.

They are working their way up the road - yes the Southern section is nearly completely finished, but further north some sections still need to be sealed (and then barriers installed).

I'm no expert on this but I don't recall seeing these as a cause for delays in previous motorway projects ( although I didn't follow those closely), and that these delays on TG were a result of the PPP contract. Maybe with this traditional approach for PP2O( NZTA ownership, managment and project management from day one with the actual physical design and construction work subcontracted??) it means these checks and consents get done in parallel. Maybe someone more in the know can shed more light.

Curiosity steered me to the FAQ and I spotted this

Why have you changed the surface from chipseal to OGPA (Open Graded Porous Asphalt)?

Waka Kotahi has confirmed that a change in surface is required for the expressway.

Recently updated traffic modelling for the expressway shows that an asphaltic surface, rather than chip seal, is required to ensure the expressway can withstand the increased traffic volumes and perform at the level required through-out its lifetime.

Traffic modelling for the expressway indicates that traffic volumes just north of Peka Peka are currently at approximately 20,000 vehicles per day. By 2031 this could grow by at least 10% to 15% per day.

Traffic modelling takes into consideration a wide range of data and information including traffic growth (both cars and trucks), potential land development and associated traffic generation and mode choice (i.e. public transport vs vehicle use).

The benefits of OGPA are:

A smoother surface for drivers
Ability to drain water from the road surface during heavy rain
Ability to withstand heavier traffic volumes
Lower operational noise.

That to me suggests that TG should have been asphalt all the way as well but we're stuck with shitty chispeal once again because of that poxy PPP.

PP2O should be a lovely drive though.

Got to drive Transmission Gully last weekend. It's certainly very impressive. Big old haul up the Kapiti side.

We thought the surface was already pretty rough - it seemed worse southbound but I might have been imaging that. Won't be too long until there are patches all over it no doubt. Wish we could sort out a proper road surface in NZ. Surely it can't be that hard.

Bring on the next section opening.

Edit - absolutely no loose chip though.

Why do I keep hearing this??? It costs 10 times as much, is less safe technically, with worse grip. If this is the way people feel be ready to fork out 10x more taxes covered by fuel and vehicle registration or have 10x less new road infrastructure. The typography of NZ is not suited for Porous Asphalt in many situations. We are a generally large country with a small population to pay for all of this , these are just reality's..

its a generally straight piece of road with high speed limits.

Its also 10x nicer to drive on that chipseal, lasts longer etc etc.

Personally I'm sick of paying for chip seal in tyres that get ripped to shreds, windscreens and the paint work on my cars.

My main motorway car has more holes than swiss cheese.

I think the weather has taken its toll on all of SH1, drove south along it from the Waikato yesterday and some potholes were big enough to do some severe damage if one were to hit one
