Drove my wife's 1340cc Mazda Demio with two passengers over TG the other day.  I couldn't help wonder how many old cars have been a casualty of its incline.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Did the trip south to Wellinton the other day, taking our overseas visitor back to the airport. The new expressways and TG motorway are fantastic roads, it took less than 2 hours from Sanson to Oriental Bay, something that would have been impossible just a year or two ago. Kudos to the designers, and those people responsible for finally getting them built!

Not to mention the improved fuel consumption due to travelling at constant speed for such long distances. There must be significant fuel savings result from such high class roading.

No problems with the steep incline, I'm not sure why that has been so worrisome for so many people. There are certainly other roads around the country that match it that everyone accepts.

Now we just need the terrible 80k's max speed stretch from Otaki to Levin to be sorted out ...

Imagine the productivity boost and fuel/time saving if the entire road from Wellington to Auckland etc was like that...!

Transmission Gully is working well.

(I still think the road surface is crap though.)

Yip, and eventually it will get resurfaced with asphalt at some future point.

They'll say we need to resurface it anyway, but we will upgrade it match the rest of the Wellington Motorway Network..

.- Heck they are paving the upgraded SH58 with Asphalt as we speak, so its not a decision that was based on traffic numbers, its clear it was cut from TG for Cost....

Will it though?

Does the whole PPP thing and the Ventia management for the next 24 years not mean that this could be very different from the rest of the network?

There are genuine questions because I really don't know, not intended as criticisms of your statement.  I sincerely hope what you say is true and I'd love to see it in writing somewhere if you have a link.

NZTA will end up paying part or most of the "upgrade" cost, ...but i don't expect it anytime soon .....

There are lots of performance specs that the road has to meet, pot holes,  ruts etc,

It well known that Heavily trafficked Chip seal wears quicker and more expensively than Asphalt,  and even now you can see rutting beginning to appear in parts of the Chip sealed sections,

So the operators will start to do the maths and they will eventually conclude that its cheaper in the long run to Asphalt it rather than having to continually replace the chip seal...

But there are do many moving parts ( The road owners, Ventia as the operator and NZTA as the client) nothing will happen quickly ...
