all - Anyone care to speculate why Tesla won't bring the price down to ensure the red gets the benefit of EV subsidy by dropping the price $788 (on red) as that would sell more units.

“I’m not buying a Tesla because I can’t get a red one under the subsidy cap”

said nobody ever.๐Ÿ˜

The red multicoat is (supposedly) more difficult to apply and slows the production line down.*  The premium you pay for it has come down from $3300 to $2800 (NZD) in the last 12 months.

* According to Elon Musk, who never exaggerates and potentially hardly ever tells untruths๐Ÿ˜.

With the recent Tesla price drops in Jan it appears NZ has not benefited as well as Australia

In NZ the Model Y RWD price dropped $300 from NZ $76,200 to NZ $75,900

In AU the Model Y RWD price dropped AU $3400 from AU $72,300 to AU $68,900 and the red paint decreased AU $500 to AU $2,400

Converting the AU prices to NZ would comfortably bring the Model Y RWD in red under NZ$80K

Maybe Australia has more competitive tension

It is strongly suspected that Tesla was selling the Model Y RWD in NZ below (by approx $3000 - $4000) what it would sell it for if the market had no rebate price cap. This allowed the model Y RWD incl some color options that come in under the $80k price cap, as to be eligible for the rebate.

In terms of the rest of the portfolio:

Model 3 RWD: $4000 drop.

Model 3 Performance: $3000 drop.

Model Y Performance: $3000 drop.

The Model Y in red cost AUD74,186 drive away. You forgot to add delivery fee, on road cost and order fee. That and the fact GST in Aussie is only 10% means that it would cost the equivalent of NZD84640 in NZ. Well over the rebate threshold and the price the same car is sold for in NZ.

Thank you for that correction, you're right the red model Y is like NZ over the NZ $80K figure too

I wonder when Tesla will reduce cost again?

Prehaps when the Atto 4 (looks like and targets the model 3/y segment) is released for pre order or APAC market gets model 3/y with 4680 batteries

Wow you ordered last June!

Can I preorder the model Y with 4680 batteries, HW4 and V2L, maybe I can get some or all of those in 2024 ๐Ÿ˜

Has been a long wait in Au / NZ for the MYP. First deliveries this weekend I believe. The best time to order a Tesla is now. Theres always going to be a new feature or upgrade coming.

So did I, and I got mine in the end of August. But that was the RWD version and not the Performance version.

For me the RWD has enough power as it is. But can see why someone might want the 4WD and extra quick 0-100 kmh.

You can order the Model Y with 4680 batteries if you live in the US. No other region have them available. I think 2024 might be optimistic on getting that battery pack from Shanghai.

Not so sure about V2L either. Would love it if the Teslas had it, but don't see it happening anytime soon.

Question for you, have you driven the Model 3 RWD to compare to the Model Y RWD. I am wanting to get into a tesla this year (fingers crossed) and wanting to hear firsthand what the performance difference is between the two for general road cruising.

The Model Y is the only one I haven't been in/drove, have done the Model S, the Model 3, and the Model X, just no Y yet.

While my driving time with the RWD 3 isn't significant, it's enough to note the major difference is initial acceleration. The 3 provides the kick from the get go that people have come to expect with EVs, whereas the Y is surprisingly sedate up to about 30-35kmh. I'm not talking granny car slow, as it's still faster than most ICEs at the lights, for example, but don't expect to be blown away. Above about 40 is where the power gets unleashed and it's more than fast enough up to at least 140 (so I've been told). IMO, this is where acceleration makes a practical difference, as it makes overtaking an absolute breeze.

The handling in the Y is surprisingly good - it corners really well and is fun to drive. It's a little bit hard in the suspension, but no worse than my last car (apparently this has been improved over time). I did close to 3k around the SI at Xmas and it performed flawlessly (other than a somewhat ropey autopilot system!) - all up, fantastic for 'general road cruising' (the spaciousness also really helps).

$2k drop on both the M3 and MY. Shit, six months too late for me! (in reference to the red now being under the threshold.)

When I said “Oh look, you can get a red Model Y for under the subsidy cap now” my wife said “They’re still ugly, even in red.” So I guess that puts paid to becoming a 2 Tesla household ๐Ÿ˜‚.

@jonathan18 If you really want a red one you could order it and sell your current one when it arrives?? Or as above, become a 2 Tesla household ๐Ÿ˜‚. The positive part of that strategy is, if the rebate gets removed in the meantime, the value of your current Y should move up.

I have nearly come to terms with not having a red car, but your idea does have merit if we do. (I've kinda embraced the dark look, having put matte black versions of the Gemini wheel covers on plus blacked out the logos. Waiting for the black number plate to arrive for the complete look...)

My wife's finally fallen in love with driving the Y, having taken it to Wgtn by herself recently; she'd certainly love a Tesla of her own, but would go with a 3 due to liking smaller cars. Unless Lotto pays up I imagine this time around the upgrade from her Leaf will be something more like an MG4 rather than a Telsa!

This comment reminded me of the waiter offering Mr Creosote “just one more wafer thin, after-dinner mint” (Monty Python’s “Meaning of Life”), where a Model 3 is just that wafer thin step up from an MG4๐Ÿ˜
