Prices were around 2.20/l . Now, the local Z is selling for around 1.77/l. Thats around a 30% discount.

But, when oil was last at the todays price we were paying around 1.30/l for 91.

I'd say the 0.47/l extra we are paying today can be explained by new taxes, wages/non-cogs inflation, and maybe fatter margins.

My guess is that we are paying about 10-20c too much by historical standards. Maybe a bit more because the nzd is stronger than it was back then.

hmm I'm pretty sure it's 1.9x in Dunedin! what the!

No Gull around here for pure competition. Closest is Pak N Save Fuel at roughly 2c per litre cheaper and the Mobil down the road matches

I filled up an hour ago at Caltex in Whakatane at $1.77 (after 6c Smartfuel discount), only to hear that it's dropping to $1.75 tonight. I should've waited an extra day!

Dunedin usually pays the same for fuel. Suddenly we pay more ... Where does fuel come from? Ie from a ship (we have ports here) or from a factory in the country? Maybe the north island should pay more for butter? (That could reveal some ignorance about where we grow cows)

Not worth hassle, no, but when it involves filling up the next day at the place I'm driving past anyway, then it's kind of annoying. But I agree; 2c really isn't much.

you do realise there are cows/dairy factories in the north island too? and groceries from the same supermarket chain are generally cheaper in the south island than in the north.

Most Fuel in NZ comes from marsden point just outside of Whangarei. This is where oil is converted into the majority of the petrolium products we buy.

all of the country's jet fuel
nearly 80% of diesel
around half of all petrol
between 75 and 85% of bitumen for roading
all fuel oil for ships
sulphur for farm fertiliser
and we even put the fizz in fizzy drinks!

From there its shipped down the line to places like CHCH, WEL, DUN etc, but Auckland gets its products through two 170km pipelines from the refinery to the Wiri oil terminal in south Auckland where its distributed.

ill happily pay more for the 1 block of butter i use every month or so, if you pay 4c per L more on the petrol/diesel you uses down there.

You really do say some silly things every now and then
