If you don't have good tyres on all 4 wheels you are an idiot. My preference is new tyres on the rear. Unless you are an expert driver it is far easier to manage and recover from under steer than oversteer.

Jase2985: i looked into whether something like the Bridgestone ecopia's were going to bet better financially over a cheaper set.
the ecopia's claim ~5% fuel saving. the problem is they are more expensive (unless you get a good deal) at ~$100 a tyre over something that offers similar performance. and the 5% saving in fuel doesnt quiet make up for that difference. if you get the 3 for 4 deal it works out ok.
i do think they are an excellent tyre though.

DizzyD: I find that I get far more mileage from the ecopia's over the cheaper alternatives.
