No, there will be mass "adoption" when you will be told "to adopt" this or that.

You've been "told" "to adopt" smartphones which are running on batteries which need to be charged EVERY day. Try to get nowadays that small lovely Nokia or Motorolla which served the purpose (to make phone call) and was running on battery for more than a week.

When the time comes - you will be told "to adopt" EV and trust me on this - you will have NO choice...

Djmixerdomo: I would absolutely love a Tesla Model S, it's one of my favourite cars. But if I did own one the only thing that I'd miss is the sound.

While the hum of a EV zipping down the road is cool, it's hard to beat the sound when you have your foot down in a V8 etc.

Perhaps Tesla could offer fake engine noise? Other manufacturers with combustion engines already do.

doing from 0 to 110km/h on Auckland motorway under 4 secs is something spectacular and breathtaking.

Too bad these are too EXPENSIVE :(

I got to go in one in Hong Kong several months ago where the driver was all too pleased to show off its motorway acceleration. I'm sold, Ive been in faster cars, but these things redefine cars entirely, just simply awesome on so many levels. Definitely on the lotto list !

Induction charging has huge health and safety issues. If they put induction coils under the road - I will stop using those roads... If they put it everywhere - I will buy a horse and will use side tracks :-)

Have you ever used Gauss meter around your 19" rack full of equipment" It radiates a lot of EMR. Every UPS has huge Transformer inside..

That EMR is byproduct. in Induction chargers - it is intentional.

All EVs and Hybrids use motor-generators which generate very strong Electro Magnetic fields. It is not known yet what adverse effect will it have on humans long term.

Service Manual for Leaf says - if you have pacemaker - stay at least 22 cm away...

I believe the Tesla approach (or something they are planning) is to swap a fully charged battery for your discharged one. This would still require substantial space for charging racks but a whole lot less than needing space to park cars for 30 minutes at at time.

I asked Mask when he was doing his AMA on Reddit the question about making sure the client gets transparency on what is the condition of the battery they are going to get if it is swapped. THe battery is expensive (~15K USD) and you do not want to swap your new but discharged to old degraded charged. Elon Mask did not reply to that challenging question.

One company in Israel was trying to introduce that "swap" ages ago before Tesla. That is similar to you going to IT store and swap your new but discharged laptop or smartphone battery. Would you do that and get 1/2 remaining capacity battery instead of your brand new with 100% design capacity in it?

Testing battery for remaining capacity requires time. You can't rely on in car diagnostic for that as the on board diagnostic can easily be fooled (via reset - e.g. can be done in Nissan Leaf) - i.e. one will dump near dead battery at the "swap" station and get hopefully a fresh one.... That is unmanagable and not practicle...

Thanks for your advice. If they do that i will buy a twin turbo v8 4wd and use alternative routes

Edit: actually i probably will only afford a mid end mountain bike. Same thing!

and it will be many decades before the internal combustion engine is extinct.

There will likely always be a place for traditional engines -- such as in trucks or extreme environments.

Other than that, once EV cost comes down not many people will own cars with pistons for personal use.

ev's are so boring though !

If by boring you mean 'better' , then yes.

I don't quite get your point, are you are saying that the general public will reject EV's because they find them boring? There will always be an enthusiast crowd around but they are in the minority.

Kind of like saying 120 years ago that people will never switch to automobiles because they prefer the smell and feel of their horses.

No what he's saying is, if 99% of things sold are X type and the 1% Y type are expensive, have no service or parts, then naturally you will buy X. Eg try to buy a manual car nowadays, not easy. Still available, but you've been "told" to buy autos.

Let's assume - there no more or just few gas cars around (in few years) and we drive all electric.

Let's assume "fast charging" takes 30 minutes on average.

Let's assume majority of cars do have the range (based on current Nissan Leaf as exampe)- 25% of current range the gas car can provide.

That would be an estimated requirement to have ~30*4=120 times more "re-filling" "stables" vs existing number of "gas stables".

The thing is that most EV owners won't need to go to a recharging station every day. Most (even with the Leaf) only need to charge over night to be able to do their commute. So your calculation of needed charging stations are way off.

BTW: Test drove the Tesla 70D (four wheel drive) when I was in Norway last June. I am sold, its a really nice car, a bit on the large side - so the Model 3 might be better (in size and price).

Its easy to get a test drive, so anyone that is curious about the Tesla should sign up for one when they are in Aussie or somewhere else they are sold.
