Thanks for all the feedback, and has given some useful information. Budget is probably around 20k, but probably can stretch to more. It is for transporting 3+ kids under 6 in the back . One consideration though is that the car has 3 proper mounts for car seats, which some cars don't seem to have. eg The Rav4 apparently only has 2 mounts.

Didn't realise Kia has upped the ante, bringing in the new Carnival with the best engine in the world ...

440nM torque at 1750rpm ... that will make your passengers fly

If you don't like Kias, at least go drive it and you will know what I mean ... the feeling of taking off in a jet plane :)

My Land Rover has 7 seats and 300 Bhp from a 4.4 litre Jag engine - it's pretty quick for a 2 tonne + car....

Have you taken it around the Tora Coast ?

No. One thing it can't do is float...!

Toyota ipsum

Thats the little brother to the Verso, and I wouldnt want 7 adults in the Verso :)

No, the Ipsum is also known as the "Avensis Verso" and is significantly bigger than the "Toyota Verso"

The Ipsum has seven usable seats, unlike (IMHO) the Qashqai + 2, the Toyota Wish or the Mazda Premacy.  There is also more (but still not a lot) luggage space with all seats up than there is with something like a Santa Fe, where the rear row of heads is virtually touching the rear window.

Couple of extra things to consider
Whatever you choose needs to have capacity for 6yo's plus however long you intend to keep the car. So if you want to keep it for 3 yrs make sure you have enough room for the 9yo's plus any gear they may have

Also if you are still using car seats or booster seats like we are for our tribe, that all child seats fit across the back seats. We've had to be fairly picky about which child or booster seats we buy so we can fit everyone in and close the doors!

I'd imagine our quahqai +2 which is 3 to 4 years old would attract around 20k so if it's a crossover vehicle you are looking for that will roughly be the age you are looking at. People movers will be different though

Best of luck!

Cheers

The Nissan Cube Cubic is a 7 seater. Its front bench seat design was fitted out with a middle seatbelt on earlier Nissans so you might be able to have an eighth seatbelt installed there too.

What did OP buy in the end? Did he go for space, looks or fuel economy?

A lot has probably happened in 5 years, in regards to 7-seater SUV’s.

I’m by no mean a car expert, but I’m considering a 7-seater SUV.
Will most of the time just be used as a 5-seater, but now and again, we would need to use it for 7 people (kids - but they obviously grow up as well).

I tried the CX9 today. Was nice. Thought the aircon was a bit breezy on the lowest settings.
Also, no wireless CarPlay, but apart from that, I thought it was very nice and pleasant to drive.

Any recommendations in the same category (budget probably around $55k - company car).

With regards to Wireless CarPlay, when we were testing out new cars last year, we find that Wireless CarPlay is only offered on selected (top) European makes, i.e. BMW (they were the first to introduce Wireless CarPlay apparently), Mini (which are owned by BMW Group), maybe Mercedes Benz.  The few Japanese models we tested (i.e. Honda Jazz, Mazda 2) didn’t come with Wireless CarPlay - they are all wired.  That said, it seemed that there are a few Wireless CarPlay adapters which you can get so that may be an option - these basically plugs into the wired CarPlay USB port and can convert the Wired CarPlay to Wireless…

Kia Carnival. It’s more practical than an SUV for carrying 7 people. Check out the Aussie YouTube review videos.

Do whatever you want to do man.

This article seems to suggest that the upcoming CX-5 update will include wireless Carplay across the range. I expect that this will flow through to the next update of the CX-9, but it's hard to predict how long you might have to wait for that.

This looks like an option for a 7-seater, if you're not bothered about fuel bills or parking...

No ones mentioned the Skoda Kodiaq. Won car of the year in 2017 and is a 7 seater. We just purchased a new one and its great. Adults can fit in the back as we’l, though I wouldn’t want to be in there for any longer that an hour.
