charge.net.nz already have a good offering. But they need to add more chargers.....though at $50,000 each I can understand why they are rolling out slowly.

Can you use Campground points for a fast charge?

Would be a good add-on for campgrounds to offer EV charging (they could charge a 'day rate' or something).

Many campgrounds have issues when everyone starts wanting a reasonable amount of power from the outlets, while each is on its own 16A breaker, the whole place isnt setup for 16A * number of sites, in some cases it is waaaaay down on that, to the point where all the people in trailers trying to heat them is enough for whole rows of them to trip out.

Isn't the idea of Nissan leaf or similar that you use if for the short urban trips that make up the majority of driving, and if you need to drive long distance you just rent a petrol car?

Encouraging to see AirNZ buying an electric fleet. I suspect there are other organisations such as DHBs and local govt where there are a lot of short distance trips, where EVs could be used.

Personally I'm waiting for an EV that can safely tow 2 Tonnes of boat and trailer at 90 km/hr for 500km on a single charge!

Fast charge (e.g. 50 kW) is a big ask and usually requires additional network connections. The 16A at campgrounds is a great backup for a handful of EVs (typically charge $2 per hour) which adds about 25km of range per hour of charge. Good point about not suited for lots of load.

You're going to have to invent another kind of battery. You'd be towing your battery for a start ...

Possible now (sort of) , but it kills the range...down to ~150km

Some campgrounds do and some don't. The LEAF can use the 16amp "Blue Commando" chargers common in campgrounds. But care has to be taken about what else might be on the same circuit. A regular 20amp circuit can really only support one car charging at 16amps...plus anything else up to the remaining 4amps.

Residential 3113 power points have the same issue. They are 20amp. The car will draw 10amp.....so you're OK as long as everything else on the circuit collectively isn't over the remaining 10amp.

But even at 16amp, the "fast" is only about 20km-30km of charge per hour. If you need to drive 100km that's going to be 3-4 hours of charging.

Given how rarely you probably ACTUALLY do that, wouldn't you just give the planet a break and reduce your daily emissions by renting an appropriate vehicle when you needed one? ;-)

But yeah....unless there are fast chargers (20 mins for useful range) around longer distances can't be done in a hurry.

On the subject of range:

Last evening I drove my LEAF back from Thames to Auckland on a full charge. It's 112km to my garage from my departure point. But Thames to Auckland is actually uphill - generally - and I was driving into the teeth of a gale at an average 90kph ("Safer low speed") on Hwy 2 and closer to 100kph on Hwy25. Plus the road was wet. All of these reduce range. I lost about 8 kms going up the Bombay Hill...and got it back through regeneration on the down side. That was a relief.

I had about 18% at that point (Vodafone Event Centre) - probably more than enough to get home in single digits of battery...but I wasn't game to push it that hard given I'd seen the hostile conditions already reduce my expected range. So I stopped for 30 mins at the Vodafone Event Centre in Manakau and charged for 30 mins on one of the two free Vector chargers there. More than good enough. It gave me an extra 8% / 15-ish km more....and a fat safety margin.

Note I made exactly the reverse journey on Monday and arrived in Thames on 24%. No issues. I estimate the overall effect of the conditions between thw two trips would have been about 10%-12% of the battery.

Petrol cars see their range reduced by adverse conditions but it is less of a problem as there are more petrol stations and it only takes 5 mins to full up. So doesn't loom in the mind as a problem.....unless you're not near one of the petrol stations when running low on petrol. :-)

Around Auckland, there is no shortage of 16amp chargers. What tends to be in short supply is the time required to charge up for anything more than a short (+15km) additional journey.

Move to National Park (highest township in NZ). Then you can tow downhill and generate power! Sell the boat before you go home.

500km is admittedly only twice per year or so rare but 300km on a single fill is every few weeks, plus local launching in between and the several other things a large SUV is very handy for. I'd be hiring a vehicle/trailer/MPV every other week.

Small boats, short trips and very low speed. Pick two of those and battery power works in boats. Electric trolling motors are effective for example.

Other wise the boat can't support the required battery capacity.

A pity, because electric motors are fantastically efficient and blissfully simple.

My trip from Thames to Auckland (same destination) during wet conditions in Prius-C - computer displayed 4.5L/100Km for that trip. Not as great as Linuxluver's zero emission but still better than many 4WDs/SUVs/Turbo with their 12-15L/100km :-)

Prius Prime with 35km EV range (going into hybrid mode if exceeded that) has been announced. When available for reasonable price (or perhaps second-hand from Japan in 3 years time) could be a hot selling car in Auckland for the daily commute. 3-year old may not have 35km range, but even if reduced to 20 km - will be enough to drive in EV only for many..

That's what our Paj (diesel) would average towing our caravan with two kayaks on the roof rack, 4 adult sized people and all our gear i.e. about a 1.5T payload plus drag from the kayaks.

Last trip from Nelson to Kerikeri was just under 13L/100km.

12L/100km for just the vehicle is pretty terrible mileage.
