If you dont like been tailgated then pull over and let them pass , then everyone is happy. what is the point of blocking the driver, it just pisses him off more and he may do something stupid involving you or another innocent driver.Tailgaters are a pain but so are drivers that dont pull over and let them carry on there lives .  

 



The demarcation line for your argument is the speed limit. 

Few people feel the need to let a speeder bully his way through traffic. 

The speeder needs to learn to drive properly.....and stop blaming others. 

 

 

Part of the issue is variation in accuracy of speedometers. My Pajero shows 108 on the speedo when a Tomtom GPS and my phone's GPS both say 100.  

 

The Mazda under the same comparisons seems very accurate.

 

A person with an accurate speedo often feels they are being held up by 'slow drivers' - many of whom think they are doing the speed limit but have an exaggerating speedo.

 

People also see certain types of (often slow) vehicles as driving slowly - trailers, campervans, trucks.  Vehicles like yours may be one of those.

 

None of that justifies aggressive driving but may explain some of it.

There is only one thing that irritates me more than a tailgater. And that's somebody driving in the right hand lane and not letting the faster traffic get past.

I've obviously had my idiotic moments then, not so much on the faster roads, as I do try to leave a reasonable space so I can accelerate before I overtake, as mentioned above, but admittedly more in town where I get frustrated by people who crawl around at 30 (if you're lucky) in a 50 zone. They can't exercise their foot on the accelerator if you beep, but they don't have any trouble exercising the odd finger...

Yeah, but most people on this forums are not traffic cops so have no right to punish other drivers. Slowing an impatient driver means that you are increasing your chances of being involved in their imminent smash.

 

Anyone who brake checks, slows down, impedes etc a faster vehicle is only increasing the blood pressure of the person behind and increasing the odds of being tangled up in a smash. 

 

The reasons someone may want to pass is not necessarily because they want exceed the speed limit - it could be that they want to maintain the limit (or momentum) through corners when you may be washing off a lot more speed than a higher performance car/more technical driver. A car doing less than the limit is obliged to facilitate the passing of faster cars (LINK), and there is no time limit on this obligation, so it applies to both straights and curves. They may remind you of this obligation and signal their desire to pass somewhere where it is safe to pass eg on a straight even though you're going the limit at that particular moment.

 

Switch thought to trucks - they like to accelerate  up to the limit + tolerance & build up momentum when approaching a steep hill in order to avoid low-gear grinds to the top - so they will put pressure on a car in front doing 85kph, even though their limit is only slightly faster at 90kph.

Some people tailgate without any intention of passing.  Perhaps they are inattentive or a poor judge of safe following distance?



The majority of tailgating is simply out of ignorance. They have no idea they're doing anything wrong. If I pulled over every time someone follows too close I'd be pulling over dozens of times over a 15 minute journey and my fuel consumption would go thru the roof.

Plenty of idiots down here in Chch tailgating on the SH1!

 

I have noticed that in NZ, criteria for a pass(in a driving test) differs from city to city.

The right lane isn't a "fast lane".  It's just another lane, usually for passing but in the case of motorways I use it a lot just to spread out the congestion.  I've been tailgated in either lane, and usually when there is a lot of congestion so I can only question the intelligence of the tailgater - I mean if I move out of the way you're just going to immediately meet the arse end of the car in front of me?!



The NZ Transport Agency specifically advises that when driving on a motorway keep left, unless you are passing.


Drivers using the right lane "just to spread out the congestion" are the bane of other motorway drivers.


There's a limit to that though. On a busy congested motorway (eg northern motorway in the morning peak traffic) all lanes will be travelling at less than the limit, and it's not sensible to think that everyone should cram into the left lane so an impatient driver can cruise past at 110.

This is a daily struggle, I drive Hutt Road and Petone Esplanade to work and home each day.  The number of numpty's on the road is phenomenal.  Usually driving a company branded vehicle too.  .  

 

 

So the road code is very clear on this one. 

 

Keep Left. 

 

If someone comes up behind you, and you can pull into the left lane then do so. Hopefully if enough people actually started following the rules and showing some courtesy to other drivers then things will improve.

What you are arguing is "not sensible", is actually the law. After you have passed traffic on the left travelling less than the limit, then move back left. Simple.

 

And it's definitely not your job to control 'impatient' drivers travelling at 110 - stay left and leave that to the police.

The exception is the Wellington smart motorway, choose the lane best suited for your intended exit and obey the variable speed. There is no last lane.

Except if you read the road code, you'll notice it says that you may use the right hand lane when the left lane is full of traffic. Unfortunately, this is the case every morning in Auckland, so the sensible thing is for all traffic to share all lanes
