It's hard to avoid Wilson in Wellington now unfortunately.

You just have Care Park with barely any left, Prime Parking with barely any left and Wilson with the rest..

I was lucky enough to get a "new customer special rate" for the Wilson car park on 80 Boulcott street at $175/mth 24/7 unreserved

I find all the companies in Akl do a special to get you onboard with a lease, then after a few months start jacking it up. Have had this from at least: Wilson, Tournament and now Britomart.

Wilson really pissed me off with this. Signed up in December 2016 at $250 / month at 80 Boulcott, and was paying that for just over a year. Saw them offering new parks at $175 / month, and asked if I could lower the monthly fee. They outright said no, since "$250 is still below the market rate". I politely told them where they can stick my custom, and cancelled the contract. And it wasn't just $175 / month for a limited time, it seemed like an indefinite offer.

How do you get that rate, and how long do you get it for?

I just happened to be on their website looking for monthly parking at the time and they had 80 Boulcott and the Plimmer steps one on special for $175/mth

Basically you have to be a new customer, and I don't believe there's a set term where it goes up in price, though I wouldn't put it past them, but I've had it since October last year.

I think they do this occasionally to over subscribe their car parks before it eventually evens out again

Plimmer is $370 per week right now. 37 Boulcott is $330/wk. Better than $550 at Victoria but also further to walk.

I have read that Wilsons is primarily a land banking company - parking is side business for them. The land that they buy, they don't seem to spend much money on, so that would figure.

I guess they are a virus and once they have killed their host, (forced everyone to take public transport) they'll sell the land, and in this rising market, make a good profit.

It's interesting though, Wilson bought the car park on Willeston Street (next to Tony's Tyre service) off Care Park. Care Park basically left it to rot, it was dark/dank and people shat in the lift.

Since Wilson bought it, it's had a few upgrades including paint job, better lighting, lights above the car park to determine if its free or not plus number of free parks displayed on the outside.

Granted its got a ridiculous daily rate of $24 or something like that, they've turned that car park around

Is the terrace carpark under the motorway still council run? I found the council run parking buildings were the cheapest, but not sure If the council has subcontracted their car parks out to private companies these days. I would be interested to see if parking charges have increased by inflation. You can still do coupon parking, however I think that is about to go up in price again in price soon. I purchased a coupon recently and it was scratch off portion only went up to 2018.

Wilson don't own their sites, they are an "operator"

Every 5-10 years building operators will put the contract to operate their parking building up for tender... The usual sharks (Wilson, care park etc) then circle and bid on how much they will pay the owner to operate the car park,

The contracts are commercial and confidential, but its highly likely that Wilson are just clipping the ticket and a fair whack of any increase gets passed back to the building owners....

I doubt building owners would let them have a fixed price contract and then watch Wilson ramp up ( and pocket) higher parking fees...

Wilson owns 3 sites in Auckland and manages or leases the rest through out the country.

Their parent is Sun Hung Kai Properties, a company that primarily develops, builds and manages properties in Hong Kong and China, and has a land banking program in those places. Can't be sure that the parents modus operandi extends to the subsidiary, but it isn't much of a stretch.

I'd go further and say that single occupant EVs present almost all the same problems as ICEVs. The only real advantages of an EV is very low emissions. Parking EVs is as problematic as ICEVs. They contribute to congestion the same way. Lower variable costs are more than offset by higher fixed costs.
