Complete rort - especially in CHCH. The most greediest owner sets the price in the morning, and within hours everyone has the same price within town. It's complete collusion. Greedy bastards.

I don''t get why someone (Not NPD) actually grows some balls and has it set to 5cpl less than everyone else?

I don't think you can say it is a rort, without knowing their return on investment.

A few years ago, a petrol station was a rubbish investment.   I think it has improved, but by how much?

There was a petrol station for sale in queenstown for 3.5 million, with 800k net profit.  That seems to be a decent return, but not astounding given the amount invested.

I don't get it though - the stations are individually managed, some have expensive rents, other have cheaper rents, some have more PAYE costs, others have fewer, so why not pass on some savings to customers instead of it being a race to the bottom? Even NPD here who doesn't even have attendants charge the same as the big retailers. They must be creaming it!!

Years ago I knew a guy who ran a station. Back then the margins were about 2c per litre. When prices went up or down they knew about it, and emptied or filled the tanks accordingly. Its different these days, but the price variances, the deals you get (not that long ago, you get 50c off if you spent x amount at a supermarket.)

Petrol is regulated in South Africa. Its was a terrible idea.

We need more unmanned "low cost" stations around. This helps bring bring down the price of other stations in the area. Fueling Kapiti is a good example of how well this works. BP/Z Kapiti are always far cheaper than BP/Z in other areas. If Fueling Kapiti disappeared, the price of fuel on the coast is sure to increase. If fuel was regulated we would not have this benefit.

Does anyone else find the manned v unmanned is starting to stretch a little now that the likes of BP is the equivalent of a bakehouse, Krispy Kreme and coffee shop in one.

Assuming those that run them don't chase the collusion/passive cartel model that many seem to do. 14c cheaper. Not a lot. How much does a manned station make on other goods they sell, such as trailers, food, drink, etc? Maybe FK should be more cheaper but rakes in some extra margin on the hidden pretence that its unmanned and cheaper. Only they know that ansswer

Does is really matter what their profits are? There is no doubting that these unmanned stations help drive pricing down.

Rotorua seems to have the cheapest fuel in the country? How many of these unmanned stations there are in Rotorua? Do you believe they are part of the reason for the cheaper fuel?

If they keep decreasing interest rates then the NZ dollar will continue to dro pin value compared to the US, so petrol will be more expensive to buy. Except our house prices will keep going up, as people will be able to afford to service larger mortgages,  so that will make many feel rich and keep people happy.

And further messes up the housing market because there is zero point in having money in the bank (which now factoring inflation in gets a zero return) when you can invest in property and get a return.
