@turtleattacks how are you finding your CX-9? We’re in the market for a new CX-5, I guess we’ll need to shop around the different dealers to see who can offer the best discount as like you the first one we went to has offered us about 8% off as well.

We test drove various cars:

  • Forester
  • Outback
  • Santa Fe
  • Defender
  • Equinox
  • Karoq

We had originally owned a 2003 Subaru Forester with a broken rear diff.

Anyway, I love it and probably would still get it again.

Here is what I wrote in another forum:

Love

  • Power - the 2.5L turbo engine is really powerful and the car feels really fast.
  • Interior - really luxury inside, love the Napa leather and the rose wood.
  • Infotainment - The new upgraded screen is really nice, fast Apple CarPlay and Bose stereo is good enough.
  • Noise management - great noise management, very limited exterior noise.
  • Keyless entry - Really cool that I can unlock the car with the key in my pocket and it will lock when I walk away from it.
  • Camera - the 360 camera is great, I no longer need to turn my head to look out the back when I reverse.
  • Adaptive/Radar cruise control - Game changer when driving long distance, works quite well.

Dislike

  • Interior storage - I really wish there's more interior storage, in the Subaru I had so many little spaces for coins, paperwork, pens but in the CX-9, there's really very little interior storage.
  • Boot height - It's really quite high and I do worry about my puppies not being able to jump up when their are old.
  • Interior space - It's a large vehicle and I would expect that it'll be larger inside.
  • Sunroof - Really wished it had a pano sunroof like its competitors.
  • Lane centering - I had test driven the 2020 Subaru Forester and had been impressed with its lane centering ability, really wished that it had the ability to do so.
  • Fuel efficiency - at 10-15L / 100KM, it's really not as fuel efficient as I would iike.

Are you sure you don't have the option to switch on lane keep assist in your CX9? My two year old CX5 GSX has it, and the CX9 specifications seem to indicate that is it standard across the range.

There’s lane keep assist, which bumps your car back in the lane if you swerve out of it, and there’s also lane centering which proactively steers your car to the centre of the lane.

Mazda has lane keep assist but not lane centering.

Interesting, thanks. I didn't appreciate that these were slightly different features.

Geektastic: I believe the new Subaru Outback is finally trickling in to NZ 6 or 8 months after launching in the USA. No turbos here yet though.
The dealer even had to wait for their demonstrators, which arrived late!

I waited a year for the Outback, totally would’ve bought it if there was the 2.4T. However when my car broke down, the the Outback was still about 4 weeks away, I couldn’t wait and decided to splash out extra on the CX9.

I’ll probably trade my Forester in for the Outback 2.4T Touring if it is available this time next year.

Dealer said 2022. If the 2.4T was available, I would've got it instead of the CX-9.

Scott3:

Toyota NZ is starting to tease the 4th gen highlander on their website.

https://www.toyota.co.nz/new-car/highlander/

Assume they wouldn't be doing this unless stock of the 3rd gen is running low. On the other hand it is possible that the v6 non hybrid engine option being dropped will mean that some buyers will continue to opt for the 3rd gen, even with the 4th gen close to release.

Kinda disappointing that the website describes the 181kW highlander hybrid as "Toyota's most powerful hybrid SUV ever". Those honors belong to the 225kW Rav4 Prime.

turtleattacks:

We desperately needed a new car as our 17 year old Subaru had failed the warrant.

Got very lucky as John Andrew Mazda managed to snag the last one in the country still sitting in the container (So they claimed).

Only had to wait about a week and half for it and managed to get about $6k off RRP (Around 8%).

I think it'll be at least a few weeks wait if one were to buy today.

I'm surprised that Mazda is continuing with big discounts even on models with tight supply.

That said I was surprised by the level of discounting that seems to be the norm with mazda when a contact brought one after level 4. Big discount offered from the local dealer, and even bigger discount + a more recent model of car offered by dealer in another city.

About 18 months back a colleague from work had a higher km 2014 Santa Fe and wanted to upgrade, local Mitzi/Hyundai licensed dealer offered them a measly $12k as a trade in on the new model, local Mazda dealer offered $20k plus on a new CX9, which was cheaper than the new sante fe to start with, guess what she chose lol.

mazda dealers must have more room to move than other dealers on their pricing, as I’ve heard similar stories from other people as well.

2nd hand vehicles can be hard to get as well, my brother recently went after a few 2014-15 sante fes for towing the caravan and they disappeared from dealers as soon as he expressed interest I them, and local dealers are finding them hard to get hold of. (Our low mileage 2015 model is likely worth more now than what we paid for it 18 months ago)

Second hand market is also getting harder in general, friend of ours works for a bank in the business side, a client of his told him he used to get some trade ins from the big dealers to sell, however some of the big guys are holding on to those now as well just to keep stock on the yard.

I have both lane centring and lane keep assist in my Forester.

If I had to guess, I’d say they were calibrated to work with roads that use much more reflective marking paint than is typical in NZ.

Certainly in Subaru’s implementation, the system spends more time warning me that it can’t read the road markings than it does actually working. European and Japanese roads use a thicker paint with reflective glass beads in for much of the marking, so it’s clearly visible. Rural roads in particular, certainly in the Wairarapa, give the appearance that the council used some spare white Dulux they found in a maintenance shed...!

Consequently I don’t find either feature massively useful, although when it works it’sa nice safety net.

It seems that if at least some vehicles are experiencing waiting lists (as discussed in this thread), that hasn't stopped record sales being made. It must be an excess-demand issue rather than short-supply issue and not necessarily caused by international shipping and logistics problems:

In addition to the initial post, Toyota now lists the Rav4 as having a 6mo + wait time...

And lists the Toyota 86 as sold out (I don't think I checked before, it may have been sold out for some time)...

Rav4 was NZ's third highest selling model in 2020, so it will be interesting to see what impact this has. Perhaps buyers moving up a size to a Fortuner or Highlander, or down a size to the C-HR. Or to a model from another brand like the CX-5. Or perhaps just join the wait-list.

Add the third generation Highlander to cars marked as sold out on toyota's website....

Pricing of the 4th generation has been released:

https://www.autocar.co.nz/autocar-news-app/nz-toyota-highlander-pricing-confirmed-rav4-gets-increase

And toyota has gone back on their word that the 4th generation highlander would be offered in NZ only in hybrid format, with the inclusion of non hybrid v6 options.

Toyota back order count has passed 10,000.

https://autofile.co.nz/six-month-delay-for-new-cars-

They have removed the sold out tag from some models like the Prado.

Regarding the surprise inclusion of the non-hybrid highlander, Toyota NZ may simple be taking whatever SUV's it can get it's hand on, even if the aren't quite what it wanted...

Most of the comments are about Toyota as they seem to be most willing to share info on the supply situation. But I think it applies to many other brand too. Heard elsewhere that some variants of the Ford Transit aren't available until 2022.

Anyway if you want a new car for Christmas in one higher demand / tight supply models you would be well advised to place your order soon.

Used car market pricing remains really out of wack. For example the cheapest fortuner on trademe is a  2019 GLX with 57,000km, cigarette holes in seats, dented bumper, cracked windscreen etc, asking $45,000. 48 watchers too so generating intrest.

A new Fortuner GLX is $57k driveway (towbar +$1,430). New car gets a full tank of fuel, all brand new consumables like tires, no damage, more years of warranty etc. And the New car is post facelook so as a more modern look, Substantially more engine power & torque, lower fuel consumption, and the DPF issue is meant to be fixed...

Obviously the cars are selling around this price-point if this is the cheapest one on trademe, but I am surprised that there are buyers given how a brand new one is objectively a much better deal.

The age old personal finance advice to avoid new cars due to their initial depreciation hit seems broken in these pandemic times.

Back to the 1960s, when near-new secondhand cars sold for more than new cars, because of the length of the waiting list (and the requirement for overseas funds).

Surprised the Prado is showing as not sold out again, that has been like that for quite a long time. Toyota NZ must have been hurting because of that.  Meanwhile tilToyota Australia has been selling it as normal the entire time with fairly standard lead times it seems , and have been selling Landcruiser 200 until very recently .  From the recent Stuff article I would also agree Toyota NZ seems to be the poorer cousin in this regard, presumably the other car makers are similar.

The Landcruiser 70 wagon & troopies no longer have the sold out tag either.

I'm guessing that Toyota now has some kind of timeline for new deliveries, and has made the call to start taking peoples deposits for slots in the queue, rather than turning them away to other brands.

I don't think Toyota NZ are hurting to badly. A decent portion of the shortage is demand driven. They had a few record sales months in the tail of last year. I don't have data for this year, but the industry as a whole has been cranking, and toyota has three models in the top 10 so can't be doing too bad.

https://www.autocar.co.nz/autocar-news-app/nz-new-car-sales-up-a-whopping-62-in-2021-so-far

I get the impression that they haven't had to have meaningful run out discounts for some time. Both the Landcruiser 200 and the 3rd gen Highlander sold out without any run out marketing. I think the cab over hiace van was too. I expect ex-demo car's will immediate availability would command close to full retail price too given the wait for brand new vehicles.

Also Toyota's pricing has been creeping up too. i.e: entire yaris range +$500, Fortuner GLX +500, Fortuner Limited +$1000, 4th gen highlander base +5000 (vs 3rd gen) etc.

https://www.autocar.co.nz/autocar-news-app/nz-toyota-highlander-pricing-confirmed-rav4-gets-increase

I would be dialing back marketing spend too... (or at least focusing on models with stock like corolla & camry), but there still seem to be heaps of Toyota billboards around...
