It's funny how these sort of attitudes persist. Every 20 years or so a new country enters the market with cars. In the 70s it was "Jap crap," in the 90s it was the Koreans who were denigrated and now it's the Chinese.

Not every marque will be good or successful but there's a heap more innovation happening in China than many of the established countries. It's right to be careful with any brand, it's not so long ago that GM largely left the NZ market, but it's far from an exclusively Chinese issue.

Main thing that drives me nuts, is its internal driver camera. If I wear sunglasses with a hint of tint, the camera mis-reads my eyes and accuses me of not paying attention to the road :) I can turn it off but its per drive, not a permanent setting. Quick fix is black tape over the camera ;)

It may have changed with an update, but somewhere in advanced settings there was the option to tun this off permanently (I think driver intelligence or similar), was there last time I had one as a drive car.

Theres certain aspects of it I think you can disable, but the primary system just resets. I'll take another look tonight though.

Tried last night and nope, still turns back on after locking the car then using it again.

This is the only options I get (Distract was off because I had turned it off). Its only a minor niggle, can live with it ;) Otherwise a bit of black tape over the camera works.

Sure they do, I don't think you quite get the scale of the collapse of the Chinese economy that is underway. It may be a slow train wreck but the front of the train has absolutely hit the stops. If it comes to saving the company or withdrawing from foreign countries I can guarantee they will retreat back to the mainland and there will be no recourse whatsoever. Why has no car company ever offered such long warranty periods in the past? Is certainly not because these new Chinese companies are making super high quality cars and they don't think anything will break for 8 years. Its because they care about sales right now and what happens in years to come means very little. They don't have a reputation to protect, their entire strategy is to be a bit cheaper than the others to get cash now and hope people won't think too deeply about it. Don't get me wrong, I buy lots of Chinese stuff, but its always done while carefully considering the situation and not trusting in words on paper that may well mean nothing in a weeks time. These companies create sub brands so it can be deniable and they can easily be discarded if the burden becomes too much. There will be a lot of "good deals" in the coming couple of years as Chinese brands dump massive overstocks that they can't sell elsewhere due to tarrifs etc. These will be largely disposable cars that last a few years and are then worthless. Anyway, that's my 2c, the warning is out there.

Caveat Emptor

everybody has their (low) price. i don't own a chinese EV or car and don't plan to. but i've tested a lot of them and i'd own many of them in a heartbeat, IF i needed one and the price is cheap enough. BYD Atto - works fine but didn't like the seats, road noise, too small for us, and too expensive. GWM Cannon - great ute, but underpowered, i don't need a ute, price was cheap enough and would buy if i needed one.

collapse of chinese economy? lol. they own the entire world don't they, if they collapse you will also collapse. i don't think that will happen. private companies failing doesn't mean chinese economy is collapsing, but i'm no expert in this matter.

Does this work as a permanent solution, or does the car nag you that the camera isn’t working?

Certainly when I briefly tested the BYD Shark 6, I held my thumb over the camera lens and it stopped nagging. But I’m not sure what would happen when it does a system check on startup.

Im in the Haval owners group for AU, and yeah they all do the black tape trick and it works fine :) Someone even started 3d printing little covers and selling them :D

I have to say buying a basically new vehicle and having to fudge workarounds with black tape is hardly selling me on the idea.

It’s a problem which isn’t unique to Haval. To get 5 stars on ANCAP manufacturers need these sort of driver “aids.” It’s a regulator driven problem not one specific to one marque.

With due respect, I reckon you are about 100% off the mark on this one. The world is changing, the Chinese will dominate vehicle manufacture into the future.
