Friend was listening to the radio which was reporting Diesel up 39c, 91 up 60c. Take it with a grain of salt. Would love to understand the pressure behind this as Oil's crashed back a bit to $108USD after spend a little over a day up at $125+. If thats the case then prices should come back down within a week at the pumps

DjShadow:

At what point do you call it too expensive to drive to work (if that is your preferred transport method)?

Funnily enough I calculated the fuel cost of a trip to work by car yesterday to compare with public transport.

Distance = 7.7km

Fuel @ $3.50

My hybrid car generally does 20km/L

7.7/20 = 0.385 L per trip.

0.385 * $3.50 = $1.35.

A trip by bus costs $2.20 so still cheaper to fill up the car with fuel (excluding all other vehicle costs).

Just walked down past my local Watomo 30 minutes ago.  i counted 32 cars in the queue, on the road snaking up the street. For any local Johnsonville peeps, you'll know that that queue makes the street very narrow now.

Now for bit of a rant.

I had lunch in Tawa today, and on the way into Tawa (from the south) and these are the prices I noticed:

Z (91 @ Pumped Price 310.9)

Waitomo (91 @ 285.9)

BP (91 @ Smartfuel 299.9)

Ok, fine.

In Johnsonville, you have the same 3 retailers, and they're:

Z (91 @ Pumped Price 311.9)

Waitomo (91 @ 285.9)

BP (91 @ Smartfuel 311.9)

Why is the BP Tawa so much cheaper? Is it down to the Waitomo effect ? The Tawa Waitomo is 24hours (i think) whereas the Johnsonville one closes at 6pm. Add to that Johnsonville is closer to Seaview than Tawa is? Grrr

This is another good reason for companies to allow work from home for those not already working from home and impacted by this.

I don't have a lot of choice. As a shift worker public transport isn't an option for me. However, I think I'll start driving about halfway to work then hopping on my MTB for the other half.

Gaspy app seems to be under a lot of load currently, took a few goes to make it retrieve data

Bit concerned it says 91 at BP Whitby is now $3.70

Edit: Now my local BP on Gaspy saying $3.54... yikes!

I must admit I get tired of the reduce fuel excise argument. I realise it's about 50% of the price. So if the government wiped it tomorrow and prices fell 50%, I'm sure operators will realise what the market can stand, and it will slowly creep up again. And the government coffers will need to be topped up from somewhere else.

I filled up my neice's car this morning. I didn't even look at the price but it must've been bang on $3.00. 40L for $120 or so of 91 at Gull.

As the fuel companies put up their prices, the percentage of what you pay that is tax reduces. The fuel specific taxes are 70c/L for RUC and if you're in Auckland you have a extra regional regional tax of 10c. The only percentage based tax is GST.

Currently our 3 cheapest for 91 at home (New Plymouth) are:

NPD Self Serve $2.786
New World supermarket $2.787
Gull $2.937

So we apart to be doing better than most places for some reason, but it was only a couple of months ago I was still filling for under $2 with my 16c discounts at Mobil. They are now $3.009 (before discounts).

I have to put money on it being due to the Waitomo in Tawa being on the main road, whereas the Jville one isn't and if you didn't know it was there, you'd miss it.

Gah, I missed the memo about prices changing at 6pm @ Waitomo. Got there at 9 last night for a shock... A slight drive down the road to the Pak n save fuel in Pori sorted that out.

According to Gaspy, the cheapest 91 petrol 'near' [a relative term] me is $2.83; "5 minutes ago".

The most expensive? $3.91, also updated 5 minutes ago.

What-the...? How can it possibly be over $1/l more? And that's supposed to be one of the cheaper market brands.

Ah that's good to know. So I guess when it was about $2 per litre the. It was about 50% but it was never a percentage.

Be sure to check how many Price Confirmations a listing on Gaspy has. Since it's a user reporting platform, there are people being dicks and putting up incorrect prices to troll people.

This very common in Auckland. Suburbs with higher incomes have higher petrol prices. Suburbs with litter incomes have lower petrol prices.
.
Greenlane will be almost 20c / litre more expensive than Birkdale on the north shore. I have lived in both and moved Bergen them several times / week for years.

Some of the cheapest petrol was usually in an awkward, small petrol Mobil station at Glenfield Rd and James St.

But the cheapest I've seen anywhere was in Opotiki in the eastern Bay of Plenty. When it was $2.10 / L in Tauranga it would be $1.75 / L in Opotiki.

I wish this was a universal truth

Greenlane is currently about the same or cheaper as the Don Buck Road Mobil in West Auckland. Massey isn't exactly a high-income suburb. Ironically there's a Challenge! on the same intersection with a similar price, but it's still 20 cents more than the Pak N Save fuel stop at Westgate.

I work near the BP in Greenlane (I walk through the forecourt most mornings) and it makes me mad how the prices are basically the same in the suburb I live in.

That's Adam St. I used to live down the end of Adam. I know it well.
