It's more conducive to efficient traffic flow to allow you to turn on a green signal by applying the GIVE WAY rule than have only one road on an intersection going at any one time.

Having recently gotten rid of the excellent rule which gave priority to vehicles turning out from a side street over those turning into it (they have two directions of traffic to consider) whilst clearing those turning right into it as a priority over those turning left perhaps this will be the next rule they meddle with and make congestion worse.

Oh it absolutely is the answer. It doesn't have to solve the problem of intoxicated drivers or unlicenced drivers. Your point about inexperienced drivers is irrelevant - inexperience is always going to be a potential problem. The 'ageing fleet' isn't even a problem. As for poor roads - drive to the conditions.

The problem is those that think themselves competent and in reality are anything but competent.

Which reminds me of something else I'd like to see: you should need a licence endorsement to be allowed to tow a light simple trailer.

My point regarding new drivers is relevant, if testing proves competence then new drivers have just done driving tests yet are not competent. Taking a test does not prove driving ability or driving habits it merely show that someone can pass a test.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The test for new drivers demonstrates they are familiar with the rules and are demonstrably competent AT THAT TIME AND UNDER THOSE PARTICULAR CONDITIONS to be allowed to increase their experience on the road in real world situations. The standard should be much higher for anyone that has 10 years experience and should be tested as such.

How do you pass a practical test without being competent to the prescribed standard? Can you simply "believe in yourself" as so many people seem to think is the solution to a lack of skill?

Ever notice how 99% of drivers are great when police car is in front or behind them then turn crap after police car goes? that is the same with driving tests, does not prove they are good drivers.

Isn't this the root of all our modern problems?

Your position appears to be that the road menaces are wilfully malicious. Mine is that they are simply oblivious.

I would have to say... yeah, pretty much. We seem to be drowning in an oversupply of undeserved confidence. Why seek to actually improve upon yourself when you can simply "believe" instead. It's much more convenient and effortless.

I noticed that most drivers don't respect the speed limit. Some of them get impatient when you are driving at 50k/h on a 50k road. Like "How dare you?" lol

Intersections can be particularly dangerous because there are drivers that don't give a fuss for the give way rules. They didn't even look before turning in front of you.

Did the van continue on? could have been an incident on the M/Way that triggered it or a Spider dropped from the sun visor

Maybe one's 50k and another car's 50k and the real 50s are all different. I know my cars' speedos have all been overestimating* actual speed by about 6-7kph @60.

*ie when it reads 60 the car is actually travelling at 53.5kph.

Hence when I do 50 I can understand why the cars at the back are impatient!
