Some years ago the Memsahib worked for Fonterra at Takanini. She was paying far less for her firm up there than I was back in the Wairarapa.

I’m not sure if that’s still the case. I no longer really look. If I need fuel I buy it. The price is the price.

jamesrt: According to Gaspy, the cheapest 91 petrol 'near' [a relative term] me is $2.83; "5 minutes ago".

The most expensive? $3.91, also updated 5 minutes ago.

What-the...? How can it possibly be over $1/l more? And that's supposed to be one of the cheaper market brands.

I noticed that some petrol stations raised their prices 12 cents yesterday to match the price of surrounding ones, but then dropped then 10 cents today. The price difference for 91  around me is about 30 cents which is a huge difference.  I think some are taking the piss and giving the finger to the government with the petrol reforms. I also thought stations were supposed to have boards showing all the prices, but quite a few around me only display 91 and diesel prices and not 95 / 98.

Scored 1000 litres at $2.30/l for 95 in Z's Sharetank app the other day. Went to top up and saw that price instead of something starting with a 3 and I was genuinely shocked, so had to make the most of it.

Government just announced a 3 month cut to fuel tax (25c/L all grades) and half price public transport for 3 months

Still going to leave a number of petrol stations above $3/L but it'll help

That $1000 worth in my sharetank isnt that good deal now :( - 3 months only then they will probably ratchet it back up like the frog being boiled so not all bad tho.

Thats good. Shame they didn’t suspend the “Goff Tax” (Auckland Regional Fuel Tax) for the same period. Especially since half of what they’ve collected already is unspent.

Still waiting to see how they are going to do "25c/litre" on Diesel when RUC is denominated in 1000kms... Also how will they limit RUC purchasers from Stockpiling?

I don't really understand the half price public transport being put forward to ease the impact of the fuel price increases. I mean I get it, they want to be seen to be incentivising public transport over personal vehicle use. But if you're not already commuting by public transport today, this isn't really going to change anyone's mind. My commute by car is 34mins on a good day and 65mins on a bad day (average about 45mins). For me to get to work by public transport would take 2hr and 27mins, each way. I just checked the AT website and that is the fastest route which includes a bus, 2 trains and 37mins of walking to/from stops.

You could give me free public transport, I still wouldn't use it.

They are also cutting off the grief they will get from the PT lobby crowd who will say "this doesn't help me at all" "it only helps those white meat eating cis men in their phallic steel coffins".... :)

How does it help the bike crowd tho? They are one of the noisiest angry minority of transport users ever.

Interestingly, if you look at the numbers pushed by the government today they reckon that halving the cost of public transport with cost $25 to $40 million for the 3 months.

Making PT free throughout the country would thus cost $200 to $320 million per annum. Less than the cost of the fuel subsidy over 3 months.

It doesn't, but then they aren't affected by the massive fuel increase within the past few weeks either. Same with electric cars owners

Neither would I. Give me the peace, privacy and absence of illnesses floating about that is in my car or a bus full of Lord knows who making a racket and coughing and sneezing etc and you couldn’t pay me to use the public transport.

People I know are all talking about getting hybrid or electric. $3 per litre is a real psychological marker. This is similar to the great V6/V8 selloff when petrol regularly hit $2. Except this time it's owners of average and above average displacement vehicles looking into hybrids and electric.
