So here are the full stats of models sold (Created a Google sheet for them). And you are right about the numbers :D

Quick look:

Used Leafs registered so far in 2021: 814 (of a total of 916 used pure EVs)

Total new EVs registered so far in 2021: 1046 (With Tesla Model 3 being the most sold with 394).

Oh and there is a total of 1 - ONE - Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the country. Wonder if that is a UK import or a demo car?

Its a Demo...

"The Ioniq 5 will be on show at this week’s eworld 2021 tech event at the Trusts Arena in Auckland. The event kicks off tomorrow for a two-day conference, with the second day also hosting a trade day. The event will be open to the public on Saturday, May 8."

Interesting. Is there a toyota landcruiser EV?

Yes, and it seems it has been or is in NZ.

Toyota built a Land Cruiser 70 that runs on batteries

Not only that, but I read today that Toyota is looking at actually producing them for the consumer market.

How much is a standard petrol car annual license registration cost?

Not paying that (because it's an EV) would save you how much?

Hybrid over petrol option looks to be about 10-20% more, so say $5,000 perhaps more over ICE.

EV over petrol engine looks to be around 50-100%+ more, so say $25,000 minimum more over ICE.

If we're talking about $500 less per year then I'm sorry but that's complete BS as a realistic incentive.

Just compare our pitiful incentives (as if they could be called that) to what is on offer in the US

In CA

https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/lct/cvrp.htm#:~:text=Clean%20Vehicle%20Rebate%20Program%20(CVRP,cell%20electric%20vehicle%20(FCEV).&text=Rebates%20are%20available%20to%20California,or%20lease%20an%20eligible%20vehicle.

Get up to $7,000 to purchase or lease a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV), or a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)

And then the Federal Tax Credit

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml

And again up to $7K apart from the Tesla's ( :-) ) since they have used up all their credits with the number sold. But plenty of other choices out there.

Where are the Greens when they had some power when now they are just along for the ride.

Yeah sat in a controlling stake at the decision making table, then campaigned on how the government was getting it wrong, despite actually being in a position to have influenced it.

Now the government is in a position to drive through change, it will be interesting to see if they actually do. They already have a terrible track record on delivering, with trees planted, kiwi build etc all failing.

I’m not saying any other party would be better either, I have little faith at all in the way we govern being able to deliver meaningful change unfortunately, whomever is in power.

^^^ Sad but true. Maybe when the Greens are in after the next election. IMO it will either be National + other parties or Labour + Greens. Even in the UK they are giving a healthy subsidy for EVs.

Subsidies are one way, taxes are another.
Unfortunately the present government has, with the help of the voter base, painted itself into a no new taxes corner.

Taxes not only on purchase but on running as well.

We should be taxing the hell out of company cars that are high emitters. Theres no way double cab Ute monstrosities should have any tax advantage unless they produce low emissions.

Rant over 😀

Without NZF vetoing everything it will now be interesting to see if that was the reason for not pursuing EV policies or just a good excuse at the time.

NZF managed to get $1B spend on the provincial development fund which people could argue was pork belly politics but that didn't pan out :-( Any money unspent there?

I think it's pretty obvious it was just an excuse. The policy was already there, fully developed, ready to go when NZF vetoed it. It's been what seven and a half months since they were re-elected with an absolute majority, with another 8 seats for the Greens who would support it no-questions-asked and NZF out of parliament altogether. But nothing.

I went along to the “e-world” exhibition at the Trusts Stadium in Waitakere on Saturday. It was quite busy, so there is obviously plenty of public interest in “e”.

There were the usual EVs on display, the ones you can see at dealer franchises (Kona, Leaf, i3, etc). Of more interest to me were the ones that are yet to be released here. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 (LHD model on display) and the Mazda MX-30 in the pure EV space, and the Ford Escape PHEV. Only indicative pricing was available. The MX-30 about $75k, the Escape PHEV $60-70k and the Ioniq 5 “don’t know, but a bit more than the Kona”. Release dates, MX-30 July 2021, Escape PHEV October 2021, Ioniq 5 “second half of 2021, but closer to Christmas than Queen’s Birthday”. In the case of the Ioniq, that would mean middle of next year to actually own one if the Kona launch is anything to go by.

To be honest, the Ioniq 5 was the only one that looked like the future, with the ‘look at me I’m different’ styling, particularly on the inside. In the same way as the Prius did in the 2000s and the Leaf in the 2010s. But then I guess there is a market (that includes me) where the car doesn’t have to look like an EV.

I was a little disappointed there wasn’t any interest to exhibit from VW, Jaguar, MG or Kia. While I know you can visit dealerships to view, there is value for the consumer in having the vehicles physically in the same space. I assume Tesla doesn’t get involved in that kind of stuff, which is also a shame.

It was good to be able to talk with vendors about home chargers and physically see and touch the units. Some appeared pretty flimsy but proved a bit more robust when handled.

Lots of e-bikes to test ride also. Not my cup of tea but there seemed to be plenty of interest.

Yep, I dont know why an EV has to look like a Jetsons car of the future. Maybe that can put some off as its too niche or special or different. In actual fact its just a car, the features can go on any car. Better to have normal 2021 cars that just happen to have a different powerplant to appeal more to the masses

Interesting to see the differences you'd employ if starting from scratch.  Likes of entire floor being batteries to reduce size in cabin and keep weight down low.

That sort of approach may lead to a car that doesn't look like a normal car does, no need for an engine bay for example.

No reason that a modern EV or retro fit of an existing ice car has to suddenly go 'electric' in style, and that's mostly marketing.

Wheels is a big one, and you see this on the electric mini, that goes streamline.  If that's to reduce drag then great, but why aren't we seeing that on traditional ice models etc.

The EV aspect is a massive turnoff to many.  Prius cars aren't selling much anymore, as Toyota moves their hybrid tech into their mainstream model range.
People are preferring normal cars but with hybrid configurations, rather than prius with all it's weird 70s take on a space ship futuristic style.

Only difference on a standard hybrid model is a blue glow around the front logo.

People like styling, also room, features. Does replacing the engine with a smaller one, remove transmission, add batteries mean it has to be futuristic? The Prius wasnt futuristic or what an EV should be, its just ugly, like any car can be. Tesla's car looks normal, boring and plain in fact. If I was buying an EV ute, it would not look like that cuberjunk one that Tesla produced, although thats an extreme example All I'm saying is that an EV is just a car, no more no less. If its going to have no style, or no room, most will pass. If it had style, room, its just another car, but many will buy

There has been some talk about the MX-30 being available with a rotary range extender at some point in the future which would be really cool, but I guess that would push the price over $80k in which case you'd probably be better off with a Kona electric.
