SirHumphreyAppleby:

Very disappointing to see the $80k limit still in place. I can see no reason for it, other than the green-eyed monster which taints so much of government policy.

I'd have liked to see it at least a bit higher.  The top model Kona is around $87k, this subsidy should be up to a limit of $95k if the government is determined to exclude the Jag, Audis, Mercs, Porches & higher end Teslas.  Excluding the Hyundai Kona seems a little silly to me.

Hyundai's Kona pricing is ridiculous though, so the Konda being excluded is their own fault. Mercedes is about to release the EQA which costs about the same as the Kona. I don't see how Hyundai can justify the Kona being the same price as a Merc.

So for the 60% of the population buying a car  has become more expensive and they are being penalized for being poor. all it means is that people will hold on to their cars longer because they wont be able to afford to replace them with newer models.

You say the latter like it's a bad thing! The idea is to reduce the number of ICE vehicles coming into the country. Holding onto your existing car achieves that too. You also won't pay any fee on cars that have already had a NZ owner.

Why couldn't (and why shouldn't) poor people buy economical cars?

But  60% or so of the population can only afford a car under $10,000 and they rely on Japanese imports to get a good  one, they are never going to be able to buy a EV car and now they wont be able to upgrade to a better and more fuel efficient car because they are going to cost $3000 more, so what do you think people are going to do, they are going to drive their old car for a few more years and that will be a good thing for the environment.

But why to they need a big inefficient Japanese import car?  Couldn't they buy an efficient Japanese import?

I don't think you understood my point.

It's not going to be possible to make EVs affordable to everyone. As I said, the goal is to reduce the amount of newly imported ICE vehicles coming here. Buying second hand cars within NZ is still better than spending emissions to ship slightly newer used ICE cars to our country. People buying new EVs from this feebate will be looking to sell their old vehicle and will be cheap second hand options to those that can't afford a rebated EV. Then in a few years those rebated EVs will be on the second hand market and quite possibly now at a price point that is more affordable to those that need a car under $10k.

Having said that, it is already possible to get an EV for under $10k

Well I think this announcement just about confirmed that my next car will be a Model 3
I've been procrastinating over ordering one of the in stock cars; they are now gone so I'll have to wait for one to arrive..

They still have a number of inventory cars available...however, don't order until after July 1 or you won't get the rebate.

Is there a formal govt link for info on this policy/subsidy yet?

Are hybrids in the mix in any for example, or is this for full EV only?

It applies to EV and PHEV, both new and imported. Hybrids are excluded.

You can find the official page here

None of those in stock cars now suit; either I don't want Black/White or I don't want 19 inch wheels.

I suspect there will be a few calls tomorrow to Tesla asking about purchasing one of the in stock and waiting till July to register.

I hope we don't see prices going up now. Hope they don't use 'inflation' as an excuse.

I pity the new Telsa SUV model Y is likely going to be too expensive to qualify. The model 3 isn't great for old people due to being very low down, so difficult to get in and out of.

But the way they are paying for this does seem to be a bit of a new tax. Taxing new utes, when there are no real EV alternatives doesn't seem right IMO.

They also said that lower income people will usually buy second hand cars, and they wouldn't be affected. But surely if new car prices rise, more people will buy second hand, and supply and demand will push prices up. Didn't they learn anything from the housing market with supply and demand? Plus these new more expensive cars will become more expensive second hand cars eventually.

It is a bad thing though, because older cars are likely going to be less safe and more inefficient, and this gets worse as they age.
