On the other hand, it's having the opposite effect on the new car market. Hyundai now has a number of models listed under the $80k limit whereas before only the original Ioniq qualified. Peugeot has brought forward the introduction of the e-208 and e-2008 from being available in the next year or two to have deliveries by the end of the year. I haven't seen any new cars receive an increase to their price.

Sure, let's ignore the positives that are happening at the moment and focus on the hypothetical negatives that may happen in the future.

Some prices may rise, but a car that is not much under $80k won't go up by $8.6k because of this subsidy and a car that is a little over $80k may go down in price so that it will qualify for the subsidy, gaining extra sales.  But in general it is supply & demand that determines prices and until supply improves the prices will remain high.

I have read plenty of press since subsidy announcement that says global demand for EVs is outstripping ability to supply as governments around the world try to stimulate demand. That can only have one impact on prices. TV3 news last night, Auckland EV dealer says price increases will outstrip subsidy impact.

They're just prepping you for the price rises now that demand has shot up.

Batman: shouldn't petrol cost come down if there is less demand

Quite the opposite. Refineries are expensive to run. Those expenses will remain even if/when output falls. While there'll be some option for production scale-back the cost of the plant itself, and everything required to keep it viable 'just in case', won't reduce. Oil companies, too, will want their slice of the pie to keep the diesel/petrol arms of their businesses profitable for their shareholders. OPEC will probably also raise their crude prices. The net effect of this will be an upwards trend, with the occasional dip like we see now. As much as some people want to kick and scream, hand-wring, wail, gnash their teeth etc. the writing is on the wall for ICE vehicles, just like it once was for horses.

Was browsing some cars at the car yards... The ones eligible for the import rebate are about 3k dearer than those that aren't. The guy swears he didn't alter the price... And not negotiable either lol.

I'm going to stretch electric vehicle, toi electric planes, for the moment.

I'd like to see electric planes in New Zealand. Not because it's greener, but it would likely mean more direct short haul plane trips, such as Tauranga to New Plymouth or Palmerston North to Nelson

Why Electric Planes are Inevitably Coming

To be fair a lot of well priced used (but unregistered) EV's got snapped up in the couple of days after the announcement, leaving the less attractively priced stuff on the market.

Why Electric Planes are Inevitably Coming

Now while electric planes might come eventually, That video is basically the wet dream of some 1st year varsity student,

None of the points have any linkages..

1) Capitalism is so wonderful that corporations will do what their customers mythically want..

2) Because Europe is regulating short haul air routes WHERE THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES, this will naturally become the norm in countries like the US where there is no national higher speed rail network alternative, and the only alternative to to drive 100s of miles..

3) The operating economics of a small NE American air route that gets at 66% operating subsidy from the Federal government will drive the entire rural aviation sector to adopt  planes that are slower, smaller and take longer to refuel...

4) "JUST BECAUSE"

Anyone know if the telsa 3 model that qualifies for this, has the heated steering wheel? eg has anyone purchased one very recently? I had heard that the new models from their new chinese factory now have this feature, but not sure if it is available on all versions of the model 3. That is a nice luxury feature to have.

… which our 2013 mid-spec Leaf has, along with a heat pump heater.

As much as the Leaf is derided (and, for many things to do with that damn battery, it can be deserved), the first model also came with generous features that are often non-standard on flasher current EVs and for which one must pay extra such as a heat pump heater.  (Don’t know much about the current model’s specs.)

My son, who comes with me when I test drive various cars, is ever-disappointed that so few cars have heated rear seats!

Both the US and China factories are making them with heated steering wheels now. The SR+ does not have it available, but it's most likely going to be like the rear heated seats where they're dormant but you'll be able to pay to enable them.

My 2019 Performance obviously doesn't have it, but just telling the car to turn on the climate remotely is enough to warm the wheel.

You see a similar over specd situation with the first version of ev from major manufacturers in uk.

I expect its to get an initial surge in sales which looks good on paper plus enables them to check for bugs in higher spec features early rather than delayed by having fewer high spec models sold to find faults. Ie sun roof leaks, heated wheels seats etc.
