Obraik: Tesla has reduced the price of the Model 3 once again! SR+ now starts at $66k, LR at $82k and Performance at $95k. As you can see, the Long Range is VERY close to qualifying for the rebate.

What were some people saying about car makers increasing prices?

It wasn't so much an issue for New, but for Used the BEV supply in Japan is pretty constrained and there is an active market that will bid prices up on increased demand...

Nah, there were some here that were adamant that new and used prices would go up.

What does it say about Tesla's original pricing?

I'd be a bit pissed to have bought at the old pricing only to see the value of my car decrease even more than normal.

A price drop was signalled by Tesla in their 'Battery Day' presentation largely as a result of improved economics and cost reductions in battery manufacture so not surprising to see their cars reducing in price.

No firm announcement of future price reductions on actual Tesla models was made at that time to no doubt limit depressing sales volumes in the short term due to the Osborne effect.

That it was higher due to the higher exchange rate at the time, ontop of the higher costs of resources?

It's no big secret that the cost of batteries is reducing. Since Tesla is quite vertically integrated without a dealer network it probably means they can pass these reductions on quicker.

Not just that our cars came from USA originally, the Chinese cars are now almost entirely China made, in a more efficient factory, and the SR+ with LFP cells too should be about 40% cheaper to make than the American cars and cheaper to ship here too.

Should hopefully bode well for the pricing on the Model Y when it is released.

Tesla @ $60K (after rebate) should put downward pressure on Leaf ($55K new post rebate & < $47K used 40kWh or < $57K used 62kWh post used imports rebate). Who would now pay <$57K for a used E+ Leaf?!

i asked them, no plans at this stage. that one has much more range, iirc designed from the ground up as EV, unlike the ZS which is a bolt-on/conversion from ICE.

bet they want to sell that in Europe and give us the scraps.

MG @ NZ new @ c $40K post new rebate or 2020 used import Leaf 40 @ $40-45K post smaller/used rebate is also surely a no-brainer now. Leaf prices are all headed for a fall!

BTW, what about used imports of Tesla ex Japan?! I see Drive EV of Taupo are looking at that. Bring on the competition!!

There are a few hidden costs with import Tesla's. In Japan Tesla uses their proprietary connector, so you will need to pay to have that converted to CCS2 to use the Superchargers here, otherwise you will be stuck using the 50kW Chargenet chargers with a Chademo adapter. For the Model S that has been around $10k but it hasn't been done yet for a Model 3, Drive EV are still working on that. You will also need to pay to have Tesla change the maps for New Zealand, as well as changing the SIM connection to a NZ SIM.
