shouldn’t all new vehicles now run on 91?

'95 is very big in Euro-land ,

European manufacturers tend to use higher compression ratios which need higher octane fuel ( mainly 95)

Running these vehicles long term on 91 is generally very bad..

And before the invention of "unleaded super", European cars often had to run on leaded fuel.

I am getting to work in 25 mins instead of 45-50 - there is no queue on onewa road. Traffic volumes are down massivly. If the higher prices make stocks last longer then that is a good thing.

I guess it is very different in areas where there are no public transport options such as large rural towns. It is just as busy as ever.

For those with no access to public transport, or where driving is part of the job, switching to a hybrid vehicle is the least worst option. At least until Japanese motorists go much bigger on EVs than they currently do, and they start filtering into the used JDM market.

What happened to using old cooking oil as diesel fuel? That was a thing during the first oil crisis. Is it no longer technically feasible?

Working for Families.

The families probably need the money to pay for increasing supermarket prices, extortionate school uniform prices and devices, housing plus other stuff anyway.
Children are not getting cheaper to raise?

HelloThere:
Stu1:

Not good enough , would rather the tax drop 20c per litre. Doesn’t help students , pensioners , unemployed or middle class NZ

We earn just above the cut off with three children and get nothing from the Government so no help coming our way. I now spend just over $200 nearly every two weeks just getting to work and home, plus extra for food, insurance, car costs and kids sports/dance etc but I guess that's part of the life.

We are on one income just over as well. It’s getting pretty expensive running the kids around. We have limited public transport in the surburb so often forced to drive . Hopefully it’s short term

Hmmm ... Shane Jones is now conflicted. On the one hand, you'll be using less of his donor's fossil fuels, on the other hand, you'll be buying more of his fishing donor's fish. Could the 2026 oil crisis be the final nail in the coffin for New Zealand's snapper?

Seriously though, I don't think there are anywhere near enough fish and chip shops across the country to make any meaningful dent in the diesel demand.

Germany’s WWII war machine relied heavily on synthetic fuel produced by converting coal into gasoline and diesel. China also manufactures significant amounts of synthetic fuel from coal today. New Zealand has substantial coal reserves as well, though developing coal‑to‑liquids technology would likely only be considered in an extreme global crisis.

South Korea (where 48% of our fuel comes from) has started fuel restrictions.

Towards the lower end of the spectrum (mandating 1 carless day per week for public employees, excluding electric and hydrogen). Given their position directly upstream of us in the supply chain, I think this can be used as a fairly firm basis for some kind of action in NZ.

That kind of alarmist rhetoric has no place in our political landscape unless it benefits party donors i'm afraid, now take  a whiff of that 50 bucks you're not entitled to

Looks like we will know this afternoon how many more fuel ships are en-route to NZ.

I agree, although I do feel that at this point they are inextricably linked.

Indeed. Diesel is going to be the the main pain point. Also the fuel we have least days stock in country at just 21 days.

And why do we have only 21 days diesel stocks?

In 2024, the government stopped work on procuring 70 million litres of reserve diesel stock, saying it carried significant capital cost. ... Instead, the government decided to explore other options to increase the diesel reserves from 21 days to 28 by 2028
...
{Labour MP Megan Woods} accused the government of being "short sighted" for scrapping the 70 million litre strategic reserve plans {which} would have been in place this year, Woods said, whereas the government's increased requirement for 28 days of diesel holdings would not come into place until 2028.
