Turners offers EVs on 30 day subscription:

https://www.turnerssubscription.co.nz/faq

Model availability varies by region. It's not cheap for late models. Good concept tho when a clean vehicle is required for a month.

jarledb: The EVs that are most popular with owners in Norway.

Due to Norway being early-and-eager adopters, I suspect this will be skewed toward early models.

In 2010, there weren't as many EV models as this year, and next year there's going to be a lot more.

Honestly, I'm still waiting on the Renault Zoe to come available new in New Zealand, due to its large range, and small size.

The article title is a little misleading...

driven.co.nzFirst electric Skoda has been delivered to the NZ Police. Is it full charge ahead?

The New Zealand Police took delivery of its first electric Skoda on July 22: the new Superb iV Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), which combines a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine with a battery pack that's good for up to 62km of pure-electric driving. Total petrol/electric range is up to 930km.

Not earlier models like I define them. Earlier models would be Nissan Leaf, VW e-Golf, Mitsubishi i-MiEV etc. Earlier than that and you are looking at things like the Think EV.

background piece, which should empcompass Tesla.

New York TImes: The F.T.C. votes to use its leverage to make it easier for consumers to repair their phones.

The United States Federal Trade Commission voted unanimously on Wednesday to push harder for the right of consumers to repair devices like smartphones, home appliances, cars and even farm equipment, arguing that large corporations have cost consumers by making such products harder to fix.

All five commissioners — two Republicans and three Democrats — voted to back a policy statement that promises to explore whether companies that make it harder for consumers to repair products are breaking antitrust or consumer protection laws, and to step up enforcement of the laws against violators.

...

Which bring me back to Tesla. This story was shortly predates the FTC annoucment

NewsWeek: YouTuber Fixes Tesla for NZD $1,000 After NZD $23,000 Repair Quote From Company

...Rich Benoit and Steven Salowsky from the channel Rich Rebuilds posted the video, sparking a conversation about consumers' right to repair, especially when it comes to cars.

The Tesla's lessee, identified only as Donald, damaged the car's cooling system after striking road debris. According to website The Drive, on Tesla Model 3s, a coolant line attaches to a nipple located on the battery pack underneath the car. In this case, the debris had cracked the flange, causing coolant to leak from the battery pack.

Donald took his car to an official Tesla service center, only to be quoted NZD $23,000 for the repair. The service center insisted the entire battery would need to be replaced, as the damaged part was molded into the battery pack's outer shell.

...Donald reached out to Rich Rebuilds for help. The YouTube video of the repair shows how Electrified Garage threaded a new brass fitting into pack. The final bill was just NZD $1,000.

Donald is proper screwed as the cars actual owner, tesla, who know it needed a $23,000 repair which would have been covered under the mandatory insurance requirement, Donald being cheap decided not to bother with, now has a bodged repair.

Pity that COVID makes it so hard to fly and return to the US from NZ.

Same company is offering Tesla repair courses.

You are correct in that Tesla own the leased car. At end of lease, if Donald doesn't buy the car, Tesla may likely demand the NZD $23,000 repair on return.

I guess Donald's only option is to buy the car at the end of the lease, and hope Tesla doesn't void the warranty and stop software updates.

Not strictly legal, if he went straight to an unauthorized repair, without consulting Tesla ever (and not showing hi face on Youtube), he may have gotten away with handing it over at end of lease; The repair is small and hidden behind panel.

Of course even with the sneaky behavior, Tesla could sue him after the fact, if detected later.

That sounds very weird. It's an accident. The lease agreement that does not require or provide insurance? Hard to believe. There must be more to it surely.

Unrelated, when this article was printed, New Zealand wasn't listed with "buyout" option.

Inside EVS: Tesla Starts Offering Model 3 & Y Lease Purchase Option In Some Markets

Feb 2021

...information from a new report by Teslarati confirms that Tesla is allowing Model 3 and Model Y lessees to purchase the car at the end of the lease period, though it only applies to vehicles in certain European and Asian markets, at least for now. Tesla's leasing policy is as follows, via Teslarati:

“Our used vehicle business supports new vehicle sales by integrating the trade-in of a customer’s existing Tesla or non-Tesla vehicle with the sale of a new or used Tesla vehicle. The Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles we acquire as trade-ins are subsequently remarketed, either directly by us or through third parties. We also remarket used Tesla vehicles acquired from other sources including lease returns.”

Despite this language, some Tesla Model S and Model X owners have enjoyed the opportunity to purchase their leased car after the lease period ended. This was true in global markets, including the U.S.

Tesla did publically confirm that, "in certain regions," Model S and X lessees may have the option to purchase the car once its lease expires. However, it was again made clear that this isn't the case with the Model 3 and Y.

More recent language from a 10-K filing pointed out the potential for some Model 3 and Y lessees to have the buy-out option in Europe and Asia, though there was also conflicting language, making the situation even more ambiguous.
