Geektastic: RUCs paid like they are for diesel cars and a system of NPR cameras on all the roads.

That way we can do away with all the ridiculous confetti in the windscreen.

I've often wondered if they just did away with RUCS and call it an emission charge instead. Would save some faffing around. My partner had a diesel van and it seemed like she was constantly buying RUCS.

And yet my AdBlue 2020 Mercedes diesel probably produces less significant emissions than a great many  cars on the road. I followed a diesel truck the other day (some cheap import with the Japanese characters still visible from the original sign writing!) that was belching fumes and soot like it was running on coal. Likewise the boy racer I followed last week who had no piston rings left from the smell of oil in his (silly and loud) exhaust.

Never mind the RUCs - scrap the cheap junk they allow on the road.

That's probably a different discussion. That's as much to do with the age of the NZ fleet. It certainly is less common to finance new cars here than perhaps other parts of the world. Before my current job which had company cars and then financed a personal car (a weird arrangement) by 'newest car' was maybe six or seven years old? I couldn't justify spending a year's wages on a vehicle.

Agreed. Until I sent electric in 2016 the previous 35 years were "ten years old and $10,000". Wasting money on 'splody engines' never made any sense. But EVs are so much quieter, cheaper to run and need so little servicing the advantages of spending more made it worth it. Just not dripping oil on a clean concrete garage floor is worth more to me. :-)

With filling up my tank of diesel once every few weeks managing the make some savings at the current 'stable' prices. In Oamaru there is large price range from most expensive (Z and BP usually) to cheapest (Gull or NPD) so haven't paid more than $2.55 a litre.  The price has been higher at the cheaper ones regularly up to $2.88 but managing to time my re-fueling cycle to dodge it.  Seems like diesel in particular is not dropping and probably won't be back to the historical price gap between petrol and diesel.

Last week some stations in west auckland were $3.39 for 91. That gave me a shock. This week all back in the 3.09 to 3.20 range.

I got a Costco card and found out three things. The station does not take credit cards, the hours don't suit me, the price is typically the same as the middle pak and save 10c off voucher.

In other news pak and save spend $200 get 40c off per litre this weekend. It's easy enough to spend $200 on groceries. Harder to sync groceries and gas. Do the vouchers have two week expiry? That could work. Edit: My no brainer is a new unattended Waitomo station on Lincoln Rd. That one seems to remain competitive daily at the lower end of the range.

In a “Let them eat cake” kind of way.😕

And since prices are back up to the level that caused panic in the Politburo and they knocked 25c off the excise, does that mean they are going to knock another 25c off? Because surely people are struggling just as much again now?

I do think now is the perfect opportunity for them to remove the fuel excise on petrol and put everybody on RUCs.

As I said before, RUCS is such a crap system. Just call it an emissions charge instead. If you burn it, you pay.

NB filled up project car with 98 last week $3.59 per litre it was. Fortunately a little tank and it lasts a month.

RUC's an emissions chargers are nothing to do with each other.

RUC's are to pay for the cost of the reading system (especially upkeep of the damage your vehicle causes).

Damage to the road goes up with the 4th power of the axle load, so in short, cars, bikes etc do trival damage, and trucks and busses do heaps. Current system is set up to charge for this appropriately, and encourage less road damaging truck configurations (load spread over more axles).

Abandoning that, and just charging per liter would mean a massive subsidy for the trucking industray as they would no longer have to pay a fair share for the damage that they do (actually it is questionable if they do under the current system).

Those small Japanese used import car's generally have a pretty good emissions profile.

They are almost all petrol and Japan has relatively strict emissions laws, in the era most were brought into NZ. (and import restrictions like the frontal impact & stability program requirements, mean that only fairly modern ones have been allowed to be imported for the last few years)

Also they are fairly cheap & abundant, so for the older one's it dosn't take that much to justify writing then off, meaning pre 2000 ones are getting more rare these day. (as a general rule, modern car's have cleaner emissions).

To me it seems the smokey vehicles are largely valuable stuff, and mostly diesel. Thirty year old Landcruiser 80 series diesel's are still often worth north of $20k, so even major faults on those vehicles are likely to be worth repairing. And you can still import that kinda stuff to NZ without meeting emissions requirements etc via the 20 year old exemption, Similar deal to a lesser extent for van's and light trucks.

And of course the stuff that is obviously faulty (or has been modified for more power at the expense of emmisions). Used to be a late model 7 series BMW around here that would puff out large clouds of smoke.

I'm surprised about the Costco fuel hours, as the images show what looks to be a pay at pump station that could easily be un-staffed.

But looked it up and your are correct 7am - 7pm...

Have a card too, and was going to drive out to try it out (21 min drive each way), as I needed fuel a couple of weeks back. (needed to fill tote tanks so was going to take the leaf, so running costs are low). Checked Gaspy, and found out the Waitomo 5 mins away was within 2c/L for 95RON, so could not justify the drive. Must say I was a little disappointing not to try it.
