RobDickinson: And the new one is made by GM so will likely catch fire.

To be fair to GM, having swung spanners on the originals, there is probably no increase in chance of a GM made variant catching on fire.

Well yeah he isnt talking about cost, the old military hummer is a different thing to the new one tho.

And the new one is made by GM so will likely catch fire.

Because they've not fixed the bolt yet.

Despite 3 recalls, and even the newer 2020 vehicles with US made cells are catching fire.

They've not yet proved they can manufacture an EV safely.

My assumption is he has the cost of the project well and truely covered by his youtube income. He may not be sponsored by the Laser cutting company, but I doubt he paid the full cost either.

He did remind me just how difficult TIG welding is though.

It's pretty "normal" for a few instances of a car to catch fire - I don't think there's a car company that doesn't have a model that hasn't caught fire at some point (especially when the rumour of the Plaid is that a bullet went through it...). It's a different story when it's an entire model of car catching fire due to a flaw in its design and having to be recalled to fix it.

Tesla has had a flaw in very early Model S that was causing fires, which is why there was controversy of them pushing out an update that reduced the charge rates among other things to stop that happening.

Three year article. Basically EV's are less likely to catch fire than Internal Combustion Engine "ICE" cars, however fire departments have less experience with the EV fires.

Not mentioned, crashes between EV's and ICE vehicles, the EV passengers usually comes out better than the ICE passengers. It comes down to weight (for same size cars, EV's are heavier), and the battery pack tends to reduce intrusion into the interior.

If safety is a primary concern, and don't mind spending more money to reduce chances of serious injuries' or death, an EV is something you should consider.

CNN: Are electric cars more likely to catch fire?

...About 174,000 vehicle fires were reported in the United States in 2015, the most recent year for which statistics are available from the National Fire Protection Association. Virtually all of those fires involved gasoline powered cars. That works out to about one every three minutes.

Tesla claims that gasoline powered cars are about 11 times more likely to catch fire than a Tesla. It says the best comparison is fires per 1 billion miles driven....

I thought it was “less likely to catch fire, harder to put out if it does”

They are not that hard to put out, just you need to keep them cool afterwards with a lot of water, similar to some other kids of fires.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you've never put a car fire out before...
