djtOtago:

afe66: I had a look about the practicalities of getting a motor bike licence so I could wander a round town on electric bike or scooter and was surprised how easy it could be for me

Ie sit theory, buy scooter and pass basic driving test then just sit on learner licence for many years.

All electric bikes are approved as learner model. I wouldnt drive at night or on open road.

A recent change to the rules announced on 4 November 2019 means a Learners licence is only valid for 5 Years

5 years is easily long enough to play with an electric scooter. By then I know whether I want drink the coolaid and get restricted or what ever the next step is. Or I could just resit the theory test and get another 5 years of learner licence...

An even more recent (i.e. yesterday) press release indicates that rule isn't working and they are looking to revert to 10 years validity, same as a full licence.

Regarding US EV subsides, The US considering giving an extra $6400 available for vehicles manufactured in the U.S. by a unionized workforce.

Also GM and Tesla are out of the picture, since they've sold too many EV's already.

Note this bill is going to the Senate, which has has 50/50 Democrats & Republicans split (Vice President makes 51 democrats).

The US is always making taxes (and this case subsidies) complicated.

I would expect some Democrats to vote against this, because they want want of that ching-ching in their home districts.

The new bill would reset any incentives so GM and Tesla would both get it.

Its basically engineered by GM and Ford at this point. Both of which suck at making Evs.

I have seen quite a few teasers about the BYD offerings coming to Australia (and hopefully NZ) and that video link a few posts back also showed a few other makes/models that look very interesting indeed.

From what I have read of the BYD 'blade' battery tech they have developed and the price points their vehicles seem to offer it actually looks like they might be able to provide an EV at an almost similar to ICE level.

I guess the unknowns (and to be honest it's not just Chinese products) is the longevity/durability of the battery packs. Certainly they seem to be teasing some pretty good driving ranges. 500km on a charge does not seem an uncommon figure. I think that takes range anxiety off the table as a selling point - even if those ranges are based on rather optimistic calculations. One would also hope that as the battery pack gradually reduces in capacity over the years, the vehicle should still be useful. Even a 20% drop would still mean a 400km range - which in this country is quite a distance.

I always thought that the Chinese car manufacturers would be the next big thing - I think they are really gearing up now.

Exciting (EV) times.

Eliot from FullyCharged is testing a BYD Dolphin right now.

It has an LFP blade 800v pack and ~400km of range I think.

If/when it comes here I suspect it'll be around $28k after subsidy, will be a real breakthrough price.

The LFP pack should be solid they are a very good stable chemistry

I don't quite understand -- if MSRP is the sticker price on a car, and the invoice price (dealer cost) is the same, how is a dealer going to make any money? The only way I can see is to add their markup on top, so $10K over sticker price seems reasonable to me. Except that Ford will also sell the same car at sticker price directly to the customers, so who in his right mind would buy one from a dealer? I'm surprised the dealers haven't attacked Ford HQ physically.

What have I missed?

That seems unlikely, surely the dealers get a margin on the car at RRP?

You would think so but that's not the way that article reads.

CNet: Congress eyes $4,500 boost to EV tax credits, but Tesla's Elon Musk isn't happy

The bill, part of Democrats' grander $3.5 trillion spending blueprint, would require an automaker to make an EV in the US with union labor.

Musk "This is written by Ford/UAW lobbyists, as they make their electric car in Mexico. Not obvious how this serves American taxpayers."
...
president of Ford's Americas & International Markets Group, said, "This legislation will help more Americans get into EVs, while at the same time supporting American manufacturing and union jobs. As the automaker who assembles more vehicles in America than any other, Ford is doing our part to lead the electric vehicle revolution by investing tens of billions of dollars in EVs." He added the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit will be built in Michigan and Missouri respectively.
