Like all things post COVID its a huge supply crunch...

During the pandemic rental car company income vanished overnight, so to keep up with the payments on their debt, most hocked off large chunks of their car fleets. some like Hertz also had to restructure its debt big time via bankruptcy

But now demand is returning (esp in the US) the rental car companies have much smaller fleets and are unable to meet demand, hence they can charge much higher rates and make more profits (which leads to their share prices rising)

Yep, perhaps hertz wasnt run the best before the pandemic, but covid smashed car rental, fleets were sold, and there is now a big shift to electric.

They have new funding and management and a shiny order in for a few new cars.

The funniest thing about this is their new CEO used to be President and CEO of Ford..

Hertz was in "Chapter 11" bankruptcy. Mainly due to Covid impact. In the US, Chapter 11 protects the company's assets from being liquidated and gives the company some time to re-organise / re-finance. In this case, two investment companies injected $6 billion into Hertz and are now running Hertz....and making calls like this one.

The market cap of Tesla has reached US$1,024,000,000,000 (just over $1 trillion), today. That's up about $110 billion (12%) from yesterday. More than the next nine largest automakers combined, says FT. Tesla is the 7th company to reach a trillion dollar market valuation.

What version is it running? They recently added a new feature to the Gen 3 that gives you 3 access options: All Vehicles, Tesla Only, Authorised Teslas Only. If you have this version, you'd want to make sure it's on the first option. If you're not on this version (21.36.4), you can download it manually here

Thank you. I'll check the WC for updates. It's definitely set to All Vehicles at present, but I only have two options, not three.
I've now tested it with a Hyundai Kona EV and it works perfectly and repeatedly. An MG owner I know says it also works with an Audi e-Tron he's tested it with. But not his MG. Hmmm.

Well, the MG5 estate certainly makes sense if you're looking for space; it's even not too slow (0-100 7.7 sec I think) and has a decent range, but every review I've read makes it clear it's about as exciting on the handling front as it is in the looks department. While I'd love to be able to stick to a wagon when I change to an EV, I'm not willing to completely compromise on how the car drives. Good second car, perhaps, as per your needs.

That said, if you don't need the boot, then the Model 3 is an additional $7,567 after rebate...

I don't need a car to be "exciting" to handle.....I've learned to drive carefully and have attended enough funerals of people who didn't (or who sadly encountered someone who didn't). We are flying meatbags in any vehicle at speed. I'll take boring every day.  :-)

Saw a Hyundai Ionic 5 in the flesh in a wanaka car park over the long weekend. Had a quick chat to owner who was sitting in it and who had already been approached by another leaf owner.

Looked quite nice.

From the side it didn't look as big as I feared although I wished I'd looked from the back to get an impression of its width.

He mentioned how he contemplated getting a tow bar option. Battery was 74% and had estimate range of another 319km. He has upgraded from a leaf.

After I wished I'd looked more but felt as the driver was sitting in it that would be rude.

Yeah they look nice, the owner would probably be fine to show you round more if you asked.

Shame they have basically sold out for the next 12 months

I didn't feel the Ioniq 5 was particularly large from the outside  - width is 5cm wider than my current car (Mazda6). but I hardly noticed that; and obviously it's quite a bit shorter (SUV vs wagon). Weirdly, the Model 3 I drove in last week felt a lot wider than mine (but it's only 1cm more!). As mentioned in my post a couple of pages back, I thought the boot on the Hyundai was not as big as I had been led to believe, but rear legroom was excellent. The front also seems nicely spacious, partly due to the relatively minimal interior and the extra space that designing an EV from the ground up allows. Thought the seats were a bit narrow across the shoulder, though...

Edit: Had a call from the salesperson at my local dealer after I  took their Ioniq 5 for a spin - apparently some more of the entry-level (under $80k) model were now available to order; that was as of Friday last week, I think. I was clear I was still waiting to find out what happens with the Y!

Drive.com : China’s BYD electric car plans stall in Australia

The Australian distributor for Chinese manufacturer BYD promised it would offer a “sub-AUD $35,000” / NZD $37,000 electric hatchback this year. Now, it appears those plans have fallen through.

...the ["BYD "EA1 electric hatchback (also known as the Dolphin] is still not on sale locally, final pricing is yet to be locked in, and Mr Todd concedes right-hand drive production of current-generation cars – which is supposed to take place on a specialised “Australia-only” assembly line – has not begun for our market. ...

The Driven: Huge demand for Ioniq 5 as first Australian batch sells out within hours

The first round of Ioniq 5 electric vehicles to go on sale in Australia – Hyundai’s first-ever dedicated battery electric model – has sold out within hours of opening to online orders

The carmaker confirmed on Wednesday that all 240 of the Ioniq 5s allocated to the Australian market had been snapped up in little more than two hours after ordering went live, with 170 $2,000 deposits taken on the $A71,900 (base price) EV through the Hyundai website.

The clear display of strong customer demand offers a welcome sign of growth for the Australian electric vehicle market, which still has much catching up to do compared with other developed nations. The initial offerings of the Volvo XC40 Recharge was also quickly sold out.

Iadbible.com: UK Mercedes Owners Could Receive Up To £10,000 Each Over 'Dieselgate'

Up to one million Mercedes-Benz owners in the UK could be able to sue the German manufacturer, with lawyers saying the value of each claim 'may reach £10,000'.

...Daimler, Mercedes-Benz's owner, is accused of installing what's known as 'defeat devices', which artificially lowered emissions when vehicles detected they were being tested.

It is the latest litigation to hit the car industry amid the 'dieselgate' scandal, in which Volkswagen and several other car manufacturers were found to have installed defeat devices - in turn meaning companies had to pay out billions are legal action was taken.

From the anti-nuke weapons "dooms day" clock people. Here's their position on nuclear plants.

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist: Why electrifying our personal infrastructure is absolutely necessary

...To address global warming in time to keep the Earth livable, we need to get to zero emissions as soon as possible. It should be obvious that we can’t “efficiency” our way to zero and that we need to transform our way to no emissions. Starting on the demand side, this leads to a clear conclusion: We must electrify everything. And quickly. And we must supply all those new electric machines on the demand side with cleanly generated electricity on the supply side.

How quickly? At roughly the rate at which we replace these things. Cars often last around 20 years. Water heaters average 12 to 15 years; furnaces and home heating solutions, around 20; kitchen and laundry appliances, 10 to 15 years. The best climate outcome we can achieve is to upgrade all of these demand-side machines to higher performing electric machines at their next retirement. This needs to be in combination with increasing the electricity supply to power these machines, and to do so with clean renewables, while also retiring coal plants and other heavy emitters ahead of schedule.
