I'd love to see the goat tracks that pass for state highways around here (Top of the South) widened, straightened and so forth, but everyone's probably got horror stories about their local roads and we haven't got the population or the traffic to win those arguments.

In general, I'd like to see curves on highways realigned so they have a constant radius.  Rounding a curve, you can't set-it-and-forget-it as you can in North America.  Instead, you judge the curve, set your speed and your steering wheel, get halfway around and - whoops, the radius suddenly tightens, better hope you weren't too close to the limits of traction.

But for a more general improvement I'd like to see roadbeds and surfaces redone for quieter travel and better economy.  There were some newspaper articles a few years back about how, because of the particular substrates and surfaces used, our roads were relatively cheap to lay, but required much more maintenance than those overseas, and they sagged so badly under the weight of heavy trucks that the trucks were in effect always driving uphill at a 15% fuel penalty.

trig42: An extra lane southbound on the Southern Motorway (SH1) from Manukau to Takanini (or even Papakura) would be great.

work is suppose to start in december/janurary

4 south bound lanes to hill road, possibly takanini, 3 to papakura
3 north bound lanes to hill road then 4 to manukau. should be 4 from takanini to manukau

and re designing the takanini interchange

Oh good. It has been a nightmare since the SH20 interchange opened. I see they are widening the NW motorway to and from Great North Road in preparation for the Waterview connection opening. Would have been a shambles if they hadn't done that.

During the big floods of June 2015, I became aware that this bridge over Waikawa stream is the only single road on the western side of the north island crossing this natural barrier.

Google map

This to me is bloody crazy. There is a plan to realign the state highway to the west to eliminate the two railway overpasses. Can't happen soon enough. Those two existing railway overpasses and the road by them all have a terrible alignment.

Hopefully the old road will be kept as a local road and as a backup route should the new one be closed due to accidents, etc.

At the very least from Warkworth to Wellington, with 90% of it at motorway / express way grade.

It is slowly extending both north and south from Auckland. Once the Waikato expressway is finished in about five years, it'll be as far as Cambridge. I'm not sure if there are any plans in the near future to extend it further south than this.

I'd like to See MOST of SH1 improved. SH1 should be 4+ lane motorway/expressway style construction it's entire length. Extend the RONS program the entire length.

On a more radical note, I fail to see why we don't just draw as straight a line as possible between Auckland and Wellington, bulldoze anything in the way, and make a nice new autobahn.

The extension of a 2x2 road south from Manukau to Cambridge however also raises the question whether the 100kmh speed limit is  still reasonable :) So you might have a point here

I drive 50-60,000k a year from Kaitaia to Bluff in rentals and a work car. Honestly most roads are fine if it's daylight, dry and people are being careful. I get more surprises from other drivers than I do from the roads. I don't mind the detour over Saddle Road in the Manawatu. It doesn't seem like it takes that much more time.

For me the biggest issue is the lack of foresight for what is termed as being Major roadworks.
Things like the SH2 River Road safety improvements a few years back and the realigned section through Ohingaiti were done at major cost.
But both should have resulted in 4 lane roads for the entire sections that were redone.
The Upper Hutt bit was put back exactly as it had been, the only difference being a barrier in the middle.  This despite major widening efforts.
If they put that much effort into the roadworks the end result for each section should be 4 lanes minimum.  Then over time they can link these sections up and eventually the entire SH1 and SH2 becomes 4 lanes, barriered and on/off ramped.

I guess there wasn't enough money at the time to look at four laning said sections.

I just wish there were more passing lanes on SH1. Example: Mangaweka hill. The last climb (headng north) before you descend into Mangaweka. There's a wide shoulder going up that hill that's used informally as a slow bay. It should be made into a proper passing lane. There is plenty of room to the left for one.

The cost of doing that would be huge especially the section between Taupo to Hunterville and in particular the northern end of the desert road. I do not think New Zealanders would like to see their road user charges raised to cover these capital costs.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Not just capital cost, but for the volumes of traffic that run across most of the north/south network is so light that the operation and maintenance costs would overwhelm any financial benefit for running this.

Build the roads with unpaid prison labour, there is a fairly conveniently located low security work prison at Rangipo.

Its not the cost of labour, but materials and products.  Consent requirements would be tremendous too given the bloody RMAs nature.  However, as I said, maintaining the road would be the killer as the cost of suitable base course materials and asphalt would be high along with the NZTAs (or more appropriately their consultants) inability to understand granular pavement design and the issues relating to stone to stone failure.
