In all seriousness though, it makes a few minutes difference on a long trip. These days I have come to accept this, and only overtake when it is safe and I can do so at a reasonable speed. I do this mostly so I can enjoy the drive rather than being stuck behind someone and constantly having to mind my following distance.

It never fails to amuse me and anger me when I am overtaken dangerously/stupidly by some numpty to stop a short time later at a town further up the road and who should be there, yep the numpty.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

When i overtake i do it as quickly as possible, the faster i go, the quicker i can go back into my proper lane. There have been times when i have gone to overtake trucks and they speed up to my speed, going 90km/h then increasing there speed to try and match mine. I end up going 160-190km/h to pass them. The couple of times i have slowed down and hopped back into my lane the trucks then slow down back to 90km/h.

Some people are for it, some against it. I would rather not get stuck behind a car going 80/90km/h on a country road, same as the motorway, if you are in the fast lane going 90km/h your in the wrong lane buddy.

I'm going to noob myself past judgement

My corolla got the speed wobbles at 120KM/h...It was almost impossible to pass on any road that wasn't slightly down hill. I now have a turbo wagon, with bigger brakes, fatter tyres and havn't had a case of the speed wobbles since.

I kind of agree with passing faster, even though 190 seems excessive to me even in the most extreme cases...But it's really easy to get up there with the right car.

If everyone drove cars with sports suspension, a big brake kit and traction control...I'm pretty sure we would see a massive drop in accidents.

Yes, but more often than not, you can't treat stupid people. Traction control can at least try and correct an idiots mistake, haha.

We have a pretty relaxed testing system for new drivers. I can't remember exactly which country, but I watched a documentary on drivers pretty much needing to learn how to become rally drivers before they could set an inch of rubber on local roads. Extensive theory and practical training in all aspects of car control.

Their roads were pretty treacherous though.

He's basically telling you that you must drive half asleep at 20Km/h under the speed limit.

Unfortunately you can't overtake (safely) in New Zealand, people tend to speed up while you try to overtake them, to play the game of course.

The Kiwi driving game rules:
1. Drive at least 20Km/h under the speed limit at all times.
2. Speed up to prevent others from overtaking you.
3. It's always a race, so keep in front at all times and if you can slow down the people behind you do so.

Not only might speeding save 5-10 minutes on a trip, hardly worth the risk, but also factor in the increased petrol consumption... A 2hr trip costs me $80, I imagine doing lots of hard acceleration overtaking/increased drag from higher sustained speed might add an extra $10 to cost... all to save 5-10 minutes... unless one gets paid $60 net upward an hour, not really worth it overall?

If you need to go 160-190 Km/hr then there wasn't room to safely overtake. The speed limit is a 100, you get caught at those speeds it is a automatic loss of licence is it really worth it?

KiwiNZ: The law is clear but I think for safety reasons it should be looked at. For me the shorter time spent exposed to danger whilst passing the better and the law should allow a momentary speed burst to allow for a quick safe over take. However in reallity if one is passing when "necessary" and can complete the task safety and according to the guidelines in the road code there should be little need to exceed the speed limits. If a rise above the limit is needed it shouldn't need to be more than about 10km/h, if it is more the 10 there is no need to overtake.

Going at 110 to over take someone at 100 will take a whole kilometre to achieve. You know how much distance you cover going at 100? And you start from about 2 car lengths behind and need to pull back in 2 car lengths in front. Dude.

I don't know if anyone knows the passing lane on SH1 traveling north past Sheep World just after Warkworth. It's the worst for this. Gutless cars can't get up the hill...Bigger cars take the opportunity, but the lane is quite short and windy. Other drivers love cornering wide at the top of the hill which has made for many blind head-on close calls. Then of course, they meet the logging truck at the top of the hill and everyone is queued again anyway with nobody any better off.

Yup my daily commute ... Dome Valley from Sheep World to Wayby Valley Road is 80km and has only 2 passing lanes when heading North, the first is the one you are talking about which is on the uphill and only about 400m long.
With a sports car like mine I have no issues powering up to almost 82kph to overtake ..... ;-)

For anyone going that way for the weekend .. there is a police man who lives in his car in Dome Valley and his is a complete and utter #%#@%%, he WILL pull you over for even thinking about exceeding the speed limit, which is why you'll notice locals sticking religiously to 80kph on that stretch.
