As far as I know, NZ is one of few countries where passing on the inside is actually legal.

My driving instructor back in the UK (where it is most certainly NOT legal) used to tell me it was called undertaking because it would kill you...!

Even here, I won't do it, so deeply does my training prevent it.

It's probably not practical, but I think that anyone as stupid as the driver in that video should not only be find and convicted, but also ordered to complete some kind of driving re-education course.

Why do people do u-turns anywhere near passing lanes? Madness.
So sad.

I believe at least two motorcyclists have been injured or killed in separate incidents after colliding with police cars doing u-turns. I don't know much about the 2010 Waikato crash, but the 2007 incident in Buller Gorge was nearer to me. In that one the cop turned to chase one motorcyclist, and two of his buddies hit the cop car while it was turning. You'd think the cops would have more sense.

UK drivers are a lot better than we are. UK has nearly half the death rate we do.

There was crazy lane changing.

But, why were most of the cars spread all over the lanes?

Ignorant, arrogant drivers!

I wonder if this has more to do with the roads, than them being superior beings when it comes to driving...

If everyone stuck to the rule keep left unless passing, passing on the inside would not happen

The UK road death stats back up the fact that UK drivers are doing it better. The death rate
there is around 5/100000 where NZ is in excess of 10/100000.

The type of driving displayed in this video clearly demonstrates why.

i read somewhere more than 50% who die are teens.

maybe the UK teens don't drive?

also perhaps not so many cars on the B roads? (same as our A roads)
their motorway is the same as the Auckland motorways, but really, our state highway 1 is equivalent to their B roads, and maybe not many cars use them

and I remember trying to be clever and take a shortcut between picton and Nelson ... 100k road ... I couldn't even do 50kph in MORE than half the road.

we have terrible roads, terrible drivers, terrible cars. perfect storm

That is why we need to drive better, leave the aggression for the sports field, slow down and take driving seriously. Too many think our roads are a play ground.

We also need to reduce the speed limit on many roads, for example the Rimutaka Hill road has a posted limit of 100 kmh to do that would be extreme stupidity but many drivers try.

have you ever tried telling males anything? goes out the other ear. but yes if people drove better that leaves the cars and the road. having said that, the fellas that dies yesterday were in the latest model LR discovery 4.

My driving greatly improved when we had our first child, it was then that I did an advanced defensive driving course. Also one of my sons was in the Military Police and was based in Waiouru for a time, he attended quite a few horrific accidents, when he managed to talk about them made one sick to the stomach. He still has bad dreams about them.

Yes but in those other countries the keep left (or right) rule is policed properly. See how long you keep your licence if hold up traffic in the fast lane in Germany.

Ever noticed when diving in Europe/UK that if some one hasn't noticed you behind them and you flash your lights they WILL actually move out of your way?

I don't think the fact that the "flash your lights" switch on your car is actually called the "pass" switch has even registered with most Kiwi drivers.
