ChargeNet say their ChargeNet 50kw DC fast chargers are going live in Whitianga and Coromandel Town on Friday, 10 November.

But it's not done until it's done.

Eastland Group (Gisborne) said yesterday they are trying very hard to get Matawai - mid-way between Opotiki and Gisborne - (50kw DC), Wairoa (50kw DC) and Tolaga Bay (25kw DC) live by Xmas. They also hope to have Morere, Te Araroa, and Putorino online next year, with the latest date being the end of May, but hopefully in March.

ChargeNet says Whitianga (4 Lees St a.k.a. the Lees St Carpark) is live as of today (10 November '17)...and Coromandel Town's ChargeNet charger is awaiting one more work item to be done. So should be online in the next few days. Then once Whangamata is done the Coromandel will have a complete ring of 5 DC fast chargers (Thames, Coromandel Town, Whitianga, Tairua and Whangamata). All are Charge Net chargers.....so 1 x CHAdemO and 1 x CCS Combo/Type 2 and 25c/kWh + 25c/Minute.....and you need a ChargeNet account.

Nope... but Tesla sell a CHaDeMO to Tesla cable and all the chargers I’ve been to had both Type2 and CHaDeMO cables available.

I noticed a free EV charger incorporated into the Spark payphone at Waitakaruru yesterday. No idea if it's a fast charger. Handily placed about half way between Auckland and the eastern Coromandel beaches though.

No they are no fast chargers they are 32A 240v.

So if you have a Japanese Lead you won't be able to use more than 16A or 3.3kwh

Wellington will soon be getting new SparkPlug sites. To use these sites you'll need to use your own cable. The new sites will follow the NZTA guidelines for AC charging. Find out more about these rules

Anyone know what output they will be using ‘for your own lead’?

Hopefully the Blue commando standard as this supports at least 16A charging (and I have that) but what ‘own plug’ supports the 32A their other ones offer (with their hardired cables)?

I can see this going wrong in two ways... people plugging standard extension cables (like the cheap backpacker/tourist motorhomer’s), kids wanting to charge their devices while hanging around for the bus/train/lift etc
OR (if they go with the commando option) more ‘upmarket’ caravanners/motorhomers using this as a free port to run their microwave/charge their ‘house’ batteries etc...?

Have any other countries paved the way with BYO cables? What did they go with for safety / security?

Nzta is pushing level 2 charging where you bring own type 2 to 1 cable.

This has advantage that a single plug can fit multiple different evs and is standard in europe. Cost about $600-1000

These are the cables you will need to plug into chargers appearing at supermarkets and the warehouse. Some will require you joining companies like charge net who supply dongles or phone apps to activate the power. Others maybe free at particular destinations but get turned off at night or have use restrictions

These are different from caravan sockets and domestic sockets. I doubt the average backpackers will have them.

So I assume that if your car has a type 2 CCS plug (Ioniq) then you need to bring a type 2 to type 2 cable?

Yes and no. Ccs2 incorporates ac and dc in one socket.

You use a type 2 to type 2 cable just connects to the ac part of plug and supplies ac current to ionic.

Different cars can use different max amounts of ac. IE Japanese leaf 3.3kwh, Zoe 22 kwh.

By forcing ev owners to bring own cable the supplier just needs to provide a generic socket rather than specific sockets for specific cars.

From reading the Ioniq handles 6.6kwh with its onboard charger if I have it right.

Another question - is there such a thing a lead that would connect the Ioniq to a charge point that has a type 1 socket i.e type 1 to type 2? I am thinking of the chargers that are at Zealandia in Wellington.
